And I would say that the only similarities between DT and Rush are musical, too. But the musical ones are many. You obviously haven't listened to Rush too much to even make a comment like that. And knowing that there a LOT of Rush fans on this list, then saying something like that is just the opposite of cool. If you want to think that Rush sucks, keep it to yourself. I love Rush. After all, they won't get one of the rare collector CDs, but they'll get to hear the music. Since it was hard enough to get when it was in print, it's really not fitting of me to make it any harder _now_ for people to hear the material. All I ask is that you approach other Jammers for copies as I'm busy on the current CDs. :) With regard to people selling the Sub Cds at a high price... well I guess I'm an evil capitalist because I'm not even worrying about it. If a price is too high, nobody will pay it, and the problem solves itself. If the sale _does_ get made, then apparently the price was reasonable. I don't get anything out of it when someone re-sells Subconscious, so for all I care, people could be paying for it with the giant stone coins of the Yap Islanders. Since it was a rare item, it's reasonable to expect some appreciation in asking prices. Cest la vie. OTOH, the original dies and masters for Subconscious are totally gone (I collected my deposit on them, which means they re-cycle the glass master and master dies for someone else) so there is literally _no way_ for Subconscious to ever be made again. And like an idiot, I only kept my own copy, and not a single extra! So when one considers how impossible it will be in 2-3 years to get one, one can easily understand why I say dubbing is cool and do it freely, and whatever price it sells for, it sells for. Take it easy all! Message-ID: Date sent: 14-SEP-1995 I hope all of you don't mind this little moment of sadness in the midst of the releasing of ACoS, but I feel that I need to postmy story, both for me and forr others who may have recently suffered a loss. Wednesday was supposed to be a good day, and it started so. I had met my friend in Whittier (almost on time :) and finally had a chance to go to a music store that I have been itching to go to ever since I heard about it over a year ago. I even found the _Lie_ import single there for $6.99. Everything was going extremely well. That is, until we got the call. My 54 year-old aunt was visiting my grandparents who are in town and five minu- tes before she was going to leave she experienced a massive cardiac arrest. When the paramedics arrived they called us. I was creating a CD inventory list on my computer and was listening to "To Live Forever" on my new _Lie_ single with I&W and Awake on deck (in my CD changer) when the phone rang. I answered it and then ran downstairs to get my dad. I was to remain at home to answer the phone and finish washing the dishes that my mom had started. My best friend called (just to talk) and I told her what happened. We discussed it and I told her that the only outcome I could see was death (because of her physical health). When I hung up the phone, I heard a lyric in my head that I could swear was Dream Theater, but I could not remember from which song. I heard: "I feel the rain pour down on me..." I remained downstairs for a few more minutes when I was about to go upstairs (it had already been well over an hour since I had gone downstairs. The phone rang and it was my father calling to tell me that my aunt's blood pressure was dropping and her heart rate was also slowing. I went upstairs as soon as I hung up, the lyric practically screaming in my head. As I topped the stairs, I realized that I had not turned off my stereo. I could hear LaBrie's vocals flow over me: "As the rain is pouring down Tears of sorrow wash his mind Drifting with the current This stream of life flows on" This was quite unexpected and I was moved to tears, the first since the first call. My parents and sister later came home and we talked then went to bed, frequently awaken by the calls of the hospital staff updating us with my aunt's condition. At about 6:10, my mother woke me up. "They called again..." And... "She passed..." When did they call? "6:00." I hope you can understand my need to post this here. I am not doing it in hopes of receiving sympathy, just to show this uncanny parallel between Dream Theater and "real life." Thank you for listening. --*-- David G. Types of tapes: Metal (Type IV - best sound) Chrome (Type II - good sound) Normal bias - (Type I - OK sound) It all depends on the quality of recording you want. If you want the best sound I can get, spend a little more money and get the Metal Bias tapes. You should be able to get all of these types in any record store. Make sure the tape is 76 minutes or more. I have a Teac HX-PRO cassette recorder with Dolby B NR and 3 tape heads, so don't worry about sound quality. This makes great recordings. Allis" To: email_address_removed Subject: re Rush and DT Message-ID: I'd just like to put my two cents in regarding Jose Marcel's message. In a Modern Drummer review of Awake, the review called Awake "the album that Rush wishes it could make." Needless to say, this critique took a lot of heat from Peart fans. I would advise Jose to listen to Hemispheres or Moving Pictures. No, Rush isn't as edged and polished as anything off of Awake. However, Rush is still one of my biggest influences. not just Peart, but the whole band (I have my artistic differences with Lifeson's solos, but his riffs are occasionally staggering). Rush has, in the past few years, made their music more mainstream. Maybe this is where Jose is getting his opinions from. however, throughout their history, Rush has made some incredible intricate pieces of music. Nothing (I mean nothing) comes as close to a riff-monger as Lie from any Rush album. Regardless, there is a lot of Rush in Dream Theatre. Portnoy is a prime example. Peart and Portnoy share the ability to lay back and keep a groove, or go completely out and BE the melody of a section. Few pro-rock drummers can do this. Second, a lot of the rhythm parts the Petrucci comes up with are styled in some of the same manners as Lifeson does his. Petrucci puts those ideas into overdrive, but the pulse of the music and the feel of the rhythms are still there. Finally, Lee and Myung don't share an incredible amount. Geddy was brought up in the groove-method, and Myung is certainly an over-the-top bass player. Even the bass solos are proof of this. However, both of them don't use the bass as simply an instrument to play quarter notes on. They use the basses to add thick, structured and ever-impressive layers to the music. I won't use the time-signature examples as sources of comparison, because any Bulgarian wedding band would simply blow DT and Rush out of the water in this respect. Even if you can't see the collective similarities between these two bands, any musician of any level of training can't help but to notice the individual similarities. And if you can't agree on Rush as being similar, then who would you choose. Fates Warning- as close as you can get to Dream Theatre without a prescription- they all site Rush. Marillion? An obviously major influence in many songs (Ian Mosley and Portnoy share some percussive aspects hit-for-hit. The two bands (Marillion and Rush) share a happy medium. Maybe if those people that compare bands to DT would actually site bands they think are similar to DT, those of us with notions regarding musical similarities could have a better grasp of how these others are approaching the music they listen to. So, I ask you... Who sounds like DT? Message-ID: Hello once again. Quick note to David G. Swanston: Gold in Japan doesn't mean 500000 copies! For the US that's correct, but you need maybe 50000 or 200000 or whatever. It's different from country to country. So maybe in (for example) Finland you get gold for let's say 10000 copies. Or even less. Wasn't it even only 5000? If I remember correctly, there were 400000 copies of I&W in the US, 40000 here in Germany, but only 200000 of Awake in the US and 90000 here. Let's face it: Just because there was no second PMU half of the Americans who got I&W didn't buy Awake. What a pity that The Silent Man didn't get enough airplay. Maybe the boys aren't pretty enough ;->... But better a normal look and awesome talent than the other way. Marillion's Fugazi: EVERYBODY here says that Misplaced Childhood was better than this album. Well, the same thing as for Metallica, I like the second album (Fugazi) a lot more than the third (MC). MC got one of the most powerful ballads I've ever heard on it (Kayleigh), the other songs are also quite good, but not as nearly as brilliant as the ones on Fugazi. Listen to Fugazi, the title song, maybe the best Marillion opus ever. Then there's... no, I better stop here. If you want my choice of the best songs of this album, read the whole track listing on the backcover ;-). Yes, I like this thing... Extreme vocals by Fish, BTW. Getting it to the limit - and over it. And a cool crunchy bass sound... Ok, taste differs, but, hell, buy it, even though $21 is a lot. Here it's about $12 ("Cool Price"-range). Marc Respass did write: >About WDADU. I really feel sorry for all you guys (and there seems to be a >lot) who heard WDADU after I&W or even after Awake. I got WDADU the month I got it some months later and I also still love it! It was a hard time back then to read news like "Dream Theater lost their deal" or "fired their vocalist". I was really surprised when I&W was released. And, to the ones who can't stand Dominici's singing, I was after a while BORED of James' voice! Dominici got his own unique sound, while on I&W there was of course a good singer, but that was it. Nothing special. I don't think I would have recognised James' voice these days. I had to wait for Awake to realise how outstanding his voice really is. As I wrote some days ago, there was more variety, more heavyness, and a better production. Brian Cox wrote: >it was funny, before erotomania he said "well i've got my DAT with me..." >and i *almost* said "cool, so do i" but luckily i restrained myself :) Nothing new. Do you EVER get out without at least one of your audio devices? ;-) But well, sounds interesting, indeed! Great news from Galactic Cowboys, BTW. I always liked their King's X meets Thrash style. Today's Friday the 15th! And I haven't found ACOS yet! At one store they said Monday or Tuesday, at the other 15th. I can't wait!
