ELP, Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd are the quintessential, historical archetypes of Progressive Rock. They's the ones that really set the foundation for Progressive. Rush & Queensrhyche would fulfill the same role in Progressive-Metal Rock. Somebody may want to flame me on this, but I wouldn't call this an opinion, but rather a FACT. (Others might want to add to these, but you certainly can't leave'm out. Didn't include King Crimson, cuz, IHMO they were/are sometimes too experimental to be easily accessed by the public; this doesn't mean I don't like them, I do.) I posted this on the King's X (Gretchen) list, but I thought non-KX's might be interested in the following as well. (sorry to waste your bandwidth if you're on both lists) --In Gretchen 26, David Crossen was wondering about the KX -- Dream Theater connection. As I've mentioned here before I found out @ KX thru the DT YTSEJAM list. Not to flame non-DT KX listeners, I've noted a wider diversity of musical background/preferences among DT fans (i.e., my friend Dale, both DT/KX, has Megadeth & Phantom of the Opera on his playlist). I know there are a fair # of DT fans also on Gretchen, or at least mention KX. Not to overstress the role of KX's faith/beliefs in their music/lyrics, I am quite surprised by the # of overt (& covert) Christians and other people with a spiritual outlook, even they who profess to be 'non-religious' on YTSEJAM. I believe that this carries over to high % of DT who also listen to KX. Also I believe this is the answer to another recent post mentioning the commonality of three other groups often seen on Gretchen (DT,GC (Galactic Cowboys) & Extreme) --Randall L. Braun, the Lone D'Ranger 'What she is not, I can easily perceive, what she is, I fear, it is impossible to say.' -- E. A. Poe 'To write or to speak is almost inevitably to lie a little. And in the act of compression, how Truth is mangled and torn!' -- Anne Morrow Lindbergh 'When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses.' -- Shirley Chisholm, former member of the US Congress ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 95 9:11 +0300 From: Aviad Hay To: email_address_removed Subject: * RE : That arrogant fool, JM's solos. Message-ID: To Marc and others: Maybe john myung took a bad solo. And he got chocked, and a dove that was flying in the area pissed on his pickups. Maybe. It's a possibility. And offcourse I accept the possibility that he just gave up soloing because he doesn't feel the need to, or he doesn't feel comfortable enough to express himself through soloing. And his music is reflected through his background stuff on DT songs. Nice. A cool bassist. The solo was bad. It made me think of John's standards - which seem to be not so high because of that. It just seemed to me that he's the kind of guy that would try anything. And touch everything. And even may do it well. I agree with what you say. I like what he does though. Very much. Maybe the guitar similarity and 6 string issue is just a reflection of what he thinks on the bass. And his groovs are great, IMHO. I would have never said what I said about John on the basis of just one solo. It's my collective view on his short licks and flavors he put on jams - the solo on the I&W show was a summery of everything. Of everything that he has done. Sorry if that upset you. or anyone else. Oh BTW: He seem to control the solo very good - the sound seemed good enough it's just that there was nothing to control - it was a real bad piece of music. Let's finish this thread now and I'll just say: John is a very good rythem player. Any band would love to have such a dedicated player - and we're lucky he's in DT, it just makes it better. And as Marc Raspass put it : "not everyone is a soloist", and that's true - john's probably not a soloist. Later. Aviad. One last thing, I went to London to see the warm up gig of Metallica at the Astoria (August 23rd). It was a killer show, but they did not cover a DT song!!! I've been in lurker mode all summer, but you don't want to hear about it. I'm inquiring as to the status of that fellow Jammer from Japan that offered to send some of us here in the states some copies of the Japanese version of ACOS (with the bonus tracks not found on the U.S. version) I can't remember his name but he offered to do this a few months ago. I just want to make sure this is still going strong. I'm sure I'm not the only jammer here who's willing to wait a few extra weeks or whatever to get his hands on a copy of what's surely going to be a hard-to-find copy of that release! So, if you have a list of people you're willing to do this for, put me on there too if you would! I can't wait! Me, I don't like unaccompanied solos but when it comes down to it, how can you blame JM for soloing when there is one class of people who insist on boring everyone--that is, drummers. Even MP's solo in LIT, while interesting the first time, is damn dull, and I'd be hard pressed to name a good drum solo. Drum duets, on the other hand, are fantastic.
