I don't think it's your imagination but it's only half of the DT fans. Playing the music they do is going to attract musicians but a lot of non-musicians like them too. I liked Rush long before I played and instrument. A musician might notice something about a DT song, know what's happening and enjoy for that reason. A non-musician might just think it's really cool but not completely understand it. It's just a different perspective and getting enjoyment from different aspects of the music. I have noticed the same thing for quite a while, when I was in high school and listening to Yes, Rush, Styx, etc. it seems that the only people who were into them at all (in any serious way) were musicians or people that seemed musically inclined. I think that most talented bands realise that a large number of their fans are musicians, and I think that is what drives them to "progress" as artists, constantly pushing themselves to outdo their last effort and retain respect from their fans. As far as guitars go, I have 2 Carvins (a red V220 and a pearl white strat shaped model) I mainly play the strat model because it has an amazing neck on it and a Kahler locking trem. This is one of the coolest trems I have seen (don't think it is made any more though). When the bar is in the "down" position (not being used), the bridge is completely locked, but when you grab the bar to inflict some damage it unlocks the bridge and becomes a full floating one. Plus this thing stays in tune! On Subconsious: I thought I recognized the cover art but couldn't place it, until I pulled out my Counterparts CD... Great work on the CD Mike! This is going to be a semi-long post but it reflects what I think would be the ultimate DT experience. Anyway, I've been thinking about how DT uses songs-within-songs and I think would be really cool if DT were to put together a song titled something like "The Majestic Jam" on their fifth or tenth studio album or something. This song would have to be fairly long (really long, maybe..30 minutes, anyone?), and it would incorporate all the themes and ideas from the past albums into one awesome song. For example, the Learning to Live/Wait for Sleep theme would have to be in it, to Silent Man theme would too, and maybe the Space Dye Vest theme. Also all the coolest parts of past songs would be in it, i.e. Dual guitar/keyboard melodies in TtT, the heavy instumental right after "the pain inside" of 6:00, the chromatic melody of CIAW, etc, etc. The themes would be redone, maybe the melodies changed a little, but still recognizable, and the heavier themes would be revamped to become more intense and "majestic" than the originals and the slower themes would be changed to be more mellow. And of course the song would definetly have to end with an extended Innocence Faded jam ending. Of course there could be lyrics in this song(The ultimate DT song can't be missing James Labrie..), and they could be about what the bands been experiencing in the past five years or something. Or maybe James could sing the coolest verses of a few songs. Kevin Moore would preferably provide some guest keyboards..(Maybe dual keyboards, with Derek and Kev both shredding away!!!) Anyone from the digest have any opinions on this idea? What songs would you like to see redone in "The Majestic Jam"? And anyone else have an idea for the Dream Theater "dream" song? If Dream Theater were to do this, oh my! I'd probably start to research about time machines just to listen to this song as soon as possible!! Maybe they could get it done before the DT-Queensryche-Rush 30th Anniversary tour?! Again, this is just an idea that I think would be cool to have DT compose, as DT is the only band I know that would do something as awesome as this. I've heard that DT sometimes reads this digest.. please consider this idea, if you're reading it. Thanks. I've never seen him in concert. Oh, and I hope James keeps the singing on the "Please! Don't! Go!" (in sync with the drums) part just like the live version when they put it on studio, contrary to an opinion posted a few jams ago. That and the instrumental section right after it are the coolest part of the song. I also like the part when James gets real emotional on the "Utopia" section. That's what's cool about DT, the constrast of light and heavy so you don't get bored listening. But yeah, anyway.. The musicianship on Don't Look Past Me is very good.. To Live Forever is a great song acoustic, and now I need to find the studio version! haha.. Eve is good, though I like the studio version better(I like the samples, tho).. Mission Impossible? The finish had a few scratches, but not enough to justify the $200 price tag (this guitar retails for about eight c's new). Well, to make a long story short, I took the Kramer in as a trade in thinking that If I got $10 for it I was getting a deal. they gave me a $125 trade on the Kramer, and the Ibanez came with a sixty dollar gig-bag at no extra cost. Essentially, I got a killer guitar for only $75 ($15 if you count the gig-bag). Is this a killer deal or what?!? The pawn shop also had a Sabre and a Jem, but those were quite a bit more. When I plug this into my Zoom 9002 effects processor I have tone from Hell! It's great! What do you other jammers who are guitarists, guitar players, or even guitar owners (I feel lucky if I fit into category 2) play? Bracken P.S. It's Jewel Blue, BTW. "...Without music, life would be an error." Nietzsche -Twilight of the Idols- Well, I had a similar deal. I got an imitation Spector guitar. It was nice, neck through construction, ACTIVE P/U's, and a genuine Floyd Rose (original) trem bar. But it was only worth about $150 Canadian at Steve's Music downtown Toronto. So... I couldn't trade it in and use the cash to buy a Jackson Charvel... Well I walked into my neighbourhood music store, a little store and there was this red Ibanez. I'm not quite sure what model, but similar to the RG 580. But this one had the sharkfin inlays... The guitarist for Andy Curran/Soho 69 wanted to sell it... for $800. But he was a really nice guy and traded it for my spector and $200 Canadian!! Not exact melody duplications, but just parts reminiscent of other songs. I've heard parts that sound like everything from Bombay Vindaloo to Only A Matter of Time to Scarred. In fact, the more I listen to it, well... the more I begin to hear other things, and the more I want to listen to it again. It's not helping my work performance at all.... eagerly awaiting the studio version circa late July/early August... Message-ID: I really liked that post about Cassandra. Discussions like these(deciphering the lyrics of DT) are the coolest things on YtseJam, in my opinion. Yeah, and did anyone notice the similarities between DT and Queensryche's latest albums? Both start with songs that are times- 6:00 and 9:28 a.m., and the beginnings of Global Mind and CIAW both sound kinda the same. Also when I first listened to WDADU, I noticed that the beginning of TOWHTSTS,(right after the opening double bass) sounds kind of like the intro riff in I Am I. Just some random comments.. I think we all need to send them flames and get the Headbanger's Ball back.... I have four guitars: Two hardwood Yamaha classicals (circa about 1978 or so), a Guild 12-string, and my electric is an Aria Pro Warrior (of the sort that George Lynch played), with two single coil Jackson pickups, Jackson electronics, and a Screamin' Demon humbucker in the bridge position...it's still got a Kahler locking tremolo, soon to be replaced by whatever is at the top of the list once the trmolo market stabilizes a bit. Oh, and the two Jacksons are going to be replaced by a Hot Rails pickup and something else to-be-determined. As for amps, etc., I have a Crate stack that I got a few years ago and a nice, big old Peavey 350 watt amp that I picked up from a friend for 100 bucks a few years back. For effects I have an old Yamaha REX-50 keyboard effects unit, a BOSS ME-5, and a fun little Macintosh, with some fun programs...(Trent Reznor, eat your heart out!). That be it for me.... Oh, and I'm hoping to soon be the proud owner of a Gibson Les Paul Studio model (midnight blue). I hope. ($2.5k isn't exactly pocket cash....) M.
