Message-ID: Howdy folks, just a few things I'd like to get off my chest. 1. All these people listing "Dream Bands" with 4 guitarists and 3 drummers, etc. I thought the point was to narrow it down to your absolute favorites? Just for the record here's mine: Vocals: Robert Plant Drums: John Bonham Bass/Keys: John Paul Jones Guitars: Jimmy Page hehe 2. I'd like to ask a question to anyone out there who may know the band more intimately than me (which is not at all I suppose)... How do they write their songs??? I heard that for Awake they just "jammed" together in the studio, and chose bits they liked or discovered on the spot. I find this rather hard to believe. Surely musicians (as talented as they are) don't just stumble over Metropolis? I would like to think that members have their own ideas that they work on, and then introduce to the band. If the "jamming" point is correct, what does James do? sit and watch? (although wouldn't you kill for that!?) 3. I'm all for a YJ convention, but I can't make it to the US, so I think It should be held in Australia... Evan. Message-ID: Date sent: 27-FEB-1995 09:42:14 I've often wondered why DT haven't incorporated more harmony vocals in their material. JP sings quite well the Silent Man vocals live. I wonder if any of the other guys in the group have decent singing voices? (Beside that of James of course) I'd probably enjoy their stuff a whole lot more. Two of DT's big influences, Kansas and Yes, were and still are into using good harmony vocals. Could someone post the e-mail address to Metal Blade Records please. I thought the Nyquist frequency is twice the bandwith of your signal, this isn't exact the same as two times the highest frequency. Philips is using this in the PASC coding of DCC's. They cut the whole audio spectrum in pieces of 600 Hz. each. All these pieces of the spectrum are sampled at a rate of 1200 Hz. This reduces the bits that are neaded to represent the whole audio signal. So a part of the reduction in the DCC system takes place through smart coding. The other part of reducing the amount of bits takes place by leaving parts out of the signal that are masked by other signals. (In time and frequency domain). If you wan't to know more about the Pasc coding, please e-mail me. Here is an update on our Ytse Convention: So far the response has been really good for the eastern seaboard. I am really glad to hear from people in Rochester since I am a half and hour south of there. I have a friend in Long Island who recommended the Marriott next to the Nassau Coliseum. Since I am still trying to gather the total number of people and pinpoint their locations we still don't have a definite site. From what I gather mid-June appears to be the time that everyone would like to have this. I still am looking for ideas/advice. I love the idea of the covers gigs, dream bands, etc. You all are getting me really nervous about this. I want this to go well and everyone's like let's make this really big. I had a dream the other night that we were in some dark auditorium and James walked on stage and turned to tell someone in the band "is this all the ytsejams there are?" and then he walked off stage. I hope that this is just a panic attack of my sub-conscious! Be patient everyone, I'm trying! I understand that there has been rumblings on the West Coast of having a convention out there? At this point I'm ready to pack up my bikini and go!!!!!!! I promise you all I will get more focused on this. I had a rough weekend (an unexpected call from an ex-boyfriend) - you know that special someone that you should have never gotten mixed up with in the first place :) Take care and I will be writing. -BABS ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Feb 1995 09:58:13 -0500 (EST) From: Hairball To: email_address_removed Subject: Minimal DT Content! =) Message-ID: > From: Mats Rydstr\vm > Subject: WDADU production > well and I like the trigged snare but some of his chinas/crashes sound > like shit and also I take it you mean I&W. In American, a language so different than the "King's English" that I don't even call it English, we spell it "Color." Here, "Colour" kinda sticks out to our eyes, looking different than the spelling we are accustomed to. However, in England (and I remember seeing a video tape of a band member saying this), people said, "Yeah, So?" =) Basically, it's just an alteration of a spelling. There's a few other instances of it in the language of American. The color/colour that is a combination of black & white is spelled two ways here: Gray and Grey. Both are acceptable. Don't worry too much about things like that. We'll know what you're talking about. Ya, man. I really like Portnoy's drum style a hell of a lot more than Peart's. Mike likes to play the drums as an instrument in the band rather than a plain old rhythm section. Every time he hits a drum it blends in with the music. He has drums tuned for every key on the musical scale. Neil (IMHO) is an excellent drummer who can keep the whole song together with all of the signature changes, etc, but Mike's better than he is now. (But, of course, Geddy's the one and only bass player in my book, next to Steve and Cliff) BTW, whoever made that post about Zonder being an awesome drummer, where do you get this from? All of the stuff I've heard him play are simple 4/4 beats that may alternate between 6/4, or 5/4, but he hardly ever uses any drum fills, double bass (I don't even think he uses it at all), or cymbal rides (there is one good song where he does do this and I love it). He doesn't really rip it up at all on either of the two albums I've got. ChucK ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Feb 1995 10:13:25 -0500 (EST) From: An Angel's Kiss... As cheesy as some of the things on it are, the recording is nearly perfect. On the harder side, King's X's "Dogman" is one of my favorites. As for "THE PERFECT MIX," that's difficult. But, after hearing this, I my opinion was changed. I now think he's an IDIOT for staying in that lame-ass band. The guitar playing, and his vocals were dead on. Second, if there's something I can help you with, let me know, via email to me. Um, I don't think it has a lot to do with his playing style. It's tone. It's the bass. It's a lot of things. I am in the process of catching up on my 'jams from the weekend. Sorry if I am talking about topics already covered. :) I've got 5 'jams to get through. Some of this is non-DT!!!!! 1. Addressed to Hairball: I read your post and yes, I live rather close Philly. Actually closer to Trenton. I live in new Jersey right across river from Levittown. A teeny place called Florence. Where is your band playing locally? I'd like to drop by and see you play if work let's me out long enough.. ;) Yo man, your knowledge about sound is incredible. My hat's off to you... 2. Michelle Garcia: Happy belated birthday. :) Hope it was grand! 3. The send your signature thing: Thanks for the post, Hairball. Stuff like that can really throw a wrench into the free speech thing. I say send them your signature. Let them know you like things the way they are. We don't want Big Brother here! :D 4. Which latenight talk show: DT would be best suited for the Jon Stewart show. His crowd would be the most receptive to them. 5. Internet mooching: I'm an Internet moocher. :) Really though, I don't have a PC at home let alone a Internet connection. SO, all of this babbling come from yup, you got it, work. I guess I might fall prey into the catagory of those who might dissappear. I work on computers all day; I really don't want to sit at one too much when it is leasure time. You don't really have many auto mechanics who say to themselves, *Shoot, I think I'll go home and work on some cars, for fun.* At my previous job, I was literally tied to a laptop and a beeper. It changed my life and instantly I had no life. Now that I changed jobs, I don't have this techno-wart on me. And I am learning to have a life again that is separate from work. Sad, thrown into the rat race at a young age. Too much responsibilities and no pay! Ahh such is life and enough of my bitching... put away your violins! 6. OK the DT stuff: Yes, I would cough up the extra tape for the covers gig. Also too, I went out and found WDADU this weekend and got it. Most interesting. :D If is a little more commercial then what I am used to but (and I might get flamed for this) Charlie didn't sound all that bad with them. I did see how his influence was more of the glam material and DT isn't really into coming out with bubblegum music. But an enjoyable album, none the less. It was neat to hear the studio version of Ytsejam... :D 7. I do have some thoughts on the SloppyJoe69 thing. It is not a flame; I am coming to the conclusion that Ken Bibb was right about the forged user... More about that soon. I've been stewing some stuff in my head over the weekend.... (Just because I don't take and use a computer at home doesn't mean that I don't think about them..
