Do they always stick close to their setlist, or have anyone attended a show where they freaked out and did a cover or another 'unplanned' song? I have heard some old demos and found tunes like Mission: Impossible and O Holy Night (xmas carol sort of), songs that most of us are familiar with. But they also demoed the great Beatles-tune (it's actually in three parts) Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End, it's really magnificent and I was hoping for them to do it on the cover-gig. These are the ones I've heard. But, I've also checked out the boot-listing and where all songs are listed I found 'FreeWill' (rush of course) and 'Gates Of Babylon'. Now, DT doing a Rush-cover may not be that surprising but what about 'Gates Of Babylon'? Have you heard it, who's singing? Is it available (together w/ FreeWill) on some boot? For you people who are unfamiliar with the title, 'Gates Of Babylon' might be a song by Rainbow from the 1978 album Long Live Rock'n'Roll, can anyone confirm this? Also: Don't Look Past Me doesn't sound like a DT-composition, anyone with more info? ________________________________________________________________________ / Mats Rydstrom - email_address_removed.se - http://www.nada.kth.se/~d94-mry / /-----------------------------------------------------------------------/ / "We can hope for the future, though there may not be one" - ACOS / /_______________________________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 95 12:43:09 EST From: Michael Herring To: email_address_removed Subject: Al DiMEola Message-ID: I agree with Will about Al DiMeola. Tuck is what I call a typical Windham Hill guitarist (though they've changed labels since I last saw them) - to me that implies a very high level of skill. (Especially when you _know_ you're going to be compared to Will Ackerman and Michael Hedges.) He's fun to see live - a touch introverted but with a slightly warped sense of humor. I'm going to be seeing them at the House of Blues at the end of February. I'm looking forward to it, since seeing them in concert is so much better than listening to the album. First off, I would have to list them in my top 5 favorite bands. That being said, I also have to be in the right mood to listen to their music. The studio work that I have heard by them (Inside Out and Parallels only) simply lacks the edge that we have come to expect by the major recording levels. To observe this, switch between Metallica's 'And Justice for All' and Fates' 'Parallels'. Metallica's album has an edge or an intensity to it, where Fates' album is somehow lacking in that department. When I first bought Parallels after a recommendation I wasn't that impressed, but after giving it enough listenings and going beyond the surface of the production I found the brilliance of the music within. That being said, if you truly wish to give Fates' a chance, pick up one or two of their albums and give them a good listen. Then after you familiarize yourself with the songs, try to catch the band live. After listening to Inside Out and Parallels for a few months and then catching them live, I must have to say I was *very* pleasantly surprised. The difference between the albums and the live show was incredible. Performing live they managed to capture that intensity that is missing from the albums and after the show my appreciation for them increased quite a bit. He's an excellent composer. One listen to Mad Man Moon will tell you that. I don't know if I'd say he's a better composer than Moore, though, mainly because it's hard to tell who wrote what in DT's songs, although I think Wait for Sleep and SDV would hold up against anything. As far as soloing is concerned, I agree that Kevin is more improvisational sounding and Banks more compositional. Maybe that's why Kevin's solos sound so much more emotional to me...they're more alive, I think, because of (among other things) his use of the pitch bend. Most of the the pich bends I hear listening to Banks and other keyboardists are big, extremely noticable. Kevin's tend to be more subtle, so that they don't scream "I'M A PITCH BEND!" but rather remove the mechanical sound of the keyboard, making it a more expressive instrument. When Kevin bends a note it sounds as natural as when Petrucci does. Other things, too, like the solo near the end of LtL. Little pauses between notes, giving them more feel, making them sound less mechanical. The keyboard can be a very confining instrument, because when you hit a key, it makes one sound, as opposed to a guitar, where you hold down the string, bending it slightly, and then pick the string. The amount you bend, the angle at which you hold the pick, other movements, all of these things affect the way each note sounds, so it will sound different every time you play it. It takes much more talent to make a keyboard sound spontaneous, and to my ear, no one does that as well as Kevin. -max ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anton Max | Aepithex is searching for a drummer to play some Keyboards, Aepithex | classically influenced melodic apocalypse rock with MadMax+@CMU.EDU | heavy metallic tendencies.
