I went to see them, and they were not progressive by any definition I have heard, especially my own. They were good, but very straightforward. My friend talked to the drummer and the drummer said that their first two albums were progressive but "you can't sell a million albums with a million time signature changes," so the new album was "less masturbatory." Yes these are direct quotes. I guess they were only playing new stuff live. So if you are into the prog thing like me, avoid the latest album (and all subsequent albums, judging from this guy's attitude). Personally, I think playing the same riff over and over and singing the same lines over and over or playing a 3 minute minor pentatonic solo over the same three chords is a lot more "masturbatory" than actually trying to be creative, but I won't get started talking about that lest I rant and rave and overload everybody's mail servers. I just picked up FW's Parallels last week and I have a couple of comments. First, does Queensryche know about this album, and what does their lawyer have to say about it? :) I'm mostly kidding of course, but the sound is very similar. The only other albums I have are No Exit and Guardian, and Parallels is a huge turn-around. I do think that the vocals are much better, being more in his range. Very nice. Second, I was looking through the obligatory "Thanks to..." section, looking for Dream Theater of course (which they spelled Dream Theatre -- ) when I came upon something unexpected. From Gibson U.S.A. they thanked Dave Timmons. "Wait!" I thought. "I know that guy!" He went to my high school, albiet a few years before me. His younger sister (who is now a neural surgeon) was my baby sitter, his dad graduated with my mom and is also our mailman, his grandparents drove my school bus and tought me in Sunday school when I was little, his grandparents also live across the street from my sister, and his grandmother and mine are best friends. Did I mention that I knew this guy? I knew he was working for Gibson, but I didn't know what he was doing there exactly. Geez, whatta job, eh? Anyway, I just thought I'd share this with everyone. By the way, does this mean I'm famous? Nah, didn't think so. By the way again, you wouldn't be able to read about this stuff on other 'less-friendly' newsgroups due to strict policies.... Toodles! OH YEAH...i listen to Awake often in different orders than the cd comes...i really like Mirror right after Space-Dye Vest and A Mind Beside Itself last...Wait for Sleep right after Surrounded is pretty cool too... IME: they suck....'nough said. oh yeah...that parody of PMU...it ruled, thanks for posting it...and Tori amos ...she's ok...dont listen too her that much... CLASSICAL: now we come to the topic i really want to tak about...i have listened to classical music for loger than anything else and i still think its about the best stuff ever written from a standpoint of musical form, etc... i hear a lot of classical influence in bands like DT and RUSH which is why i like them so much. for instance: Erotomania, that one guitar riff is straight out of Bach and then John repeats it several times at descending pitches (a very classical technique called sequence)... my music tastes in general are pretty diverse and my taste in classical is the same... generally, my favorite composer is JS Bach who IMHO is a god. my music theory teacher said the other day he was talking with his colleagues and one of them said "you can find bad mozart, and a lot of bad beethoven, and tons of bad schubert, but you just really dont find any Bach that is written poorly..." i have to agree with this...in general, i think that most Baroque music (1600-1750) is well written. for all you guys out there whose tastes lie in the dark, complex, and morbid areas, like the person who started this thread, then check out the following: Bach Organ Music: this stuff kicks a**...very heavy...very complex... often sublime though. this is my absolute favorite music, i recommend finding copies (yes multiple copies of the same pieces) of the Passacaglia in Cm, Fantasy and Fugue in Gm, the ever-popular Toccata and Fugue in Dm, the "dorian" Toccata and Fugue, Toccata Adagio and Fugue in C, and the "cathedral" Prelude and Fugue in Em. These pieces are the biggies. Best all around organist for playing these works is MIchael Murray on albums like "Bach at Methuen" and "The organ at St John the Divine in NYC". Ask for it at your local cd store. Other good Bach interpreters are Virgil Fox (albums Heavy Organ I and II), Marie Claire Alain, and Simon Preston. Other organ music: the organ literature is chock full of absolutely heavy works that will overload your senses. Try things like the Symphonies of Widor and Vierne (Michael Murray rocks on "Vierne Symphonies at St Ouen"). Also, Buxtehude wrote similar music to Bach. Mendelsshon organ music is hard to find but definitely the best stuff he ever wrote. The Saint-Seans Symphony No 3 is a piece for organ and orchestra and very energetic...look for the version recorded at Liverpool Cathedral. Franck is another really dark organ composer... again Michael Murray has the best recording ive heard. Symphonic works: for all you headbangers, try stuff like Pictures at an Exhibition (great organ version also by Jean Guillou or check out the prog-rock interpretation by ELP), Brahms Symphonies 1-4, the 1812 Ouverture (Telarc version), the Willaim Tell Ouverture, etc, etc... Dark stuff: check out Gorecki's 3rd symphonie and his other stuff, i also like a composer named Part (two dots over the 'a') if you like dissonance, try Stravinsky and the like... light stuff: a lot of good classical music is pretty light too... the over-played Pachelbel's Canon in D (oh yeah, one of my pet peeves...Pachelbel wrote much other perfectly good music like his organ works, it just NEVER gets played)...try some of the "early music" stuff like renaissance madrigals or dances, lots of it uses really ancient instruments...gregorian chant is nice ...mozart is good but it all sounds the same...i could go on for ever... the moral: try lots of different music, go to your public library, they have tons of this stuff and you can listen for free then buy what you like...you can write me if you'd like more info ...and more opinions ;) NOTE TO THE PERSON WHO LIKES THE ORCHESTRAL VERSION OF TOCCATA AND FUGUE IN DM: that being the version on Fantasia...this transcription is really dissappointing and doesnt begin to do justice to the original organ piece... try getting this cd: THE DEDICATORY RECITAL on THE GRAND CALVARY ORGAN... this is the 13th largest organ in the world with 11500 pipes and the low D pedal points in the Toccata rumble at 19 and 9 Hz with enormous intensity... bottom line: a bunch of string basses dont even compare!! check it out... these opinions are all my own and not meant to ire anyone... NOTE: the Web home pages is a new feature on our server and i talked the SYs manager into implementing it...so this is a sales pitch for people to use this feature so it doesnt go away...my page is still undergoing major renovation so bear with me...thanks "show me kindness, beauty, and truth...im learning to live." ******************************************************************************* Anthony Kozar "The Divine Spirit found a sublime outlet in Univ. of Toledo that wonder of analysis, that portent of the 1042 Acad. From the little I know, Beethoven tends to have made his symphonies (and maybe other works of his) a little thin in terms of arrangment of voices. I am wondering if this is true with other classical composers and/or Dream Theater themselves. (I really can't hear what they're talking about, however I think I understand what they're saying. ex. They leave certain instruments open, out in the blue, when they should have backing by other parts/instruments, and sometimes the bass to treble ratio is all messed up.
