As far as I remember it is titled "Red, Hot and Heavy" and the first track is at least as powerful as "Future World" (reminds me of a starting jet-engine every time I listen to it :-) ). Furthermore there is a well-known intro on it: the beginning of the "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff (da daa da daaaaa .... rrummms! [German pronounciation] :-) -> this piece of classic music you can listen to in every third tv commercial). Early stuff of them and sold out long before, I think. Apart from this I have another question: Can anybody pass me some information of the bands "Psychotic Waltz" and "Lethal" ? I've got this two albums "Everything Is Nothing" (?) and "Programmed" and wonder, if there is some more music of them or rather if they still exist. THX in advance. From the promo copies I sent out, I was one of the people who recieved a free CD. Thanks again Michael! Now to comment about it. It does remind me a lot of Dream Theater, however it remindes me more of early Fates Warning, especially the singer. It seems the singer also writes the lyrics, playes both accoustical and electric guitars (both going on at the same time) and bass. I think this would be extermely difficult to pull off live :) so I wonder what they'll do touring. The drumming definetly reminds me of Zimmerman from Fates and the singer remindes me of a mix between Arch and Tate. This guy can go low AND high, however he sounds better (in my opinion) in the lower octaves. I'm sure he'll get better as the band matures. Anyway, about the music itself, it has all that he described and more. From what I can tell, it is not like most heavy metal out there, it is written in primarily major keys. It has an upbeat, nice feel to it (without being commertial.) The interplay between the two guitars is great also. No keys, except on a few pieces (which weren't credited with someone playing them) so I'm guessing the guy who plays all instruments except drums played them but felt that they were too of a small part that he left them out. So in this sense they are more like like Queensryche or Fates Warning. But unlike QR and FW they don't have many catch phrases. I haven't really looked at the lyrics much so I can't comment on them. Bad news, its only 40 minutes, the longest song being 10 minutes with 6 songs total. Oh well, it was free. :) Oh yeah, the guitar playing seems very classically influenced, and is very fast in some places. Anyway for fans of early FW, DEFINETLY get this CD. (I happen to like the only early FW I've heard, Awaken The Guardian.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jan 1995 15:41:33 -0600 (CST) From: William Wright To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: fates warning suggestions? I saw all the FW albums, didn't know anything about any of them, so I just picked out the one with the coolest cover. Just thought I'd provide some more exposure on the favorite bands thread. Since I come to DT basically from the prog side, most of my influences are prog and jazz/fusion. The stuff I'm carrying to work with me (is this a good way to gauge current habits or not?) is Dream Theater, Rush, Queensryche, King Crimson & Sylvian/Fripp, Satriani, Vai, Eric Johnson, Shadow Gallery, and Magellan (I'm listening to this right now.) Other stuff left at home includes Beatles, Allman Bros, Doors, Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Blood,Sweat & Tears, SRV, Allan Holdsworth, Yes, Andres Wollenwieder, Pink Floyd, Captain Beyond (70's Prog-Metal, great stuff), Flash, ELP, Tull, CSN(&Y), Santana, Hendrix, Zappa, Return to Forever, Uriah Heep. One of the things I'm curious about is other people's favorite live performances that they might have seen. The top five (that I can actually remember) would be: 1) King Crimson - Tampa '74 2) Dream Theater - Denver '94 3) Zappa/Mahavishnu - Cincinnati '72 4) SRV/Jeff Beck - Denver '91 5) Flash/Captain Beyond - Dayton '72 One of the DT exposures I had while I was missing the list came as a real surprise. I was attending a musical/theatrical performance at a local high school with my daughter. The show was a bunch of comedy skits and musical numbers loosely woven together. One reoccuring theme was an old man telling stories to his grandson. After an intermission, The grandpa is dozing in his armchair and the kid is rocking with headphones. The old man rips the the phones out and 3 of the performers crank out a great cover of YTSEJAM!! It was great looking around seeing reactions in the audience! Needless to say, this was the highlight of the show for me. That's it for now. If anyone has any theories on why John thinks that Guy Smiley is the best Muppet representation, I'd sure like to here them. A couple more progressive suggestions: For one, I think one of the most important influential progressive bands that should be included in every one's list is Kansas. Forget the usual three songs (Carry on..., Point of Know Return...., Dust.....). Listen to ALL of their stuff, and then a little light bulb flashes and you realize, "Oh, so this is where the DT boys get there ideas!" Also, for you Galactic Cowboy and King's X fans, another group (which I have seen mentioned on the digest once or twice before) that you all would dig is Atomic Opera. Very cool stuff! A perfect cross between the composing of King's X and the Cowboys combined. Not AS GREAT songs, but still good stuff. Classical: DO NOT forget Mussourgsky's "Pictures at an Exibition!" Possibly one of the greatest concept (album) pieces ever created! Others I support are, of course, Beethoven's Syphonies, "Turangalila Symphony" by Messiaen, "Carmina Burana" by Orff, and others...... One more thing: I particularly LOVE the sound track to "The Natural." So damn emotional. Oh, also, even know this movie sucked the big one, another really great soundtrack is the soundtrack to "The Rocketeer." It was composed by the guy who wrote that 80's hit song "I love LA." As an import I believe... great band huh? (In fact I'm listening to Impending Ascension right now.) For anyone who doesn't know about these guys, they're a lot like DT, however more keyboard dominant. And one of the best things about this band is that you can pick it up at a local Best Buy or Blockbuster Music store... :) Now I'd like to turn subjects about something that has been on my mind for the past few days, since we are all talking about other bands that we all like. I'm surprised to see that there are few people in here who listed King Crimson in their list of great bands. I find this odd because DT reminds me so much of KC, especially the 73-74 line up with Robert Fripp, David Cross, John Wetton, and Bill Bruford. There are a LOT of similarities to the two bands. For those who don't know much about King Crimson, they are arguably the first heavy metal band. They're also the first art rock (progressive) BAND. (There were a few people before them, such as Zappa, but he wasn't really a band.) They remind me a lot of DT because I just bought their 4CD set from the 73-74 era of KC that is all live. This is an incredible set, as it has almost 300 minutes of live stuff, and about 1/3 of this is IMRPOVISED stuff. Now we all know that DT likes to improvise sometimes. However KC takes it to extremes, they always play a song differenltly than they played it have before. (No two reditions of the song sound the same.) And they have incredible sonic power (like DT) live its really unbelieveable. They can jam on for 10 minutes and it never gets old or wanders. Plus, their studio work is some of the best I've ever heard. Erotomaina reminds me a lot of Larks' Tongues in Aspic era KC. Only in these songs can you hear weird time sigs such as 17/16. :) I'm surprised that DT has never mentioned KC as an influence because these two bands are so much a like its not funny when you think about it. So, who here likes KC? And for those who have never heard KC, I'm not sure which album you should go with. I started with Larks Tongues, but honestly its not a starter album (because, like I said, its 40 minutes of Erotomaina. :)) A lot of people recommend In the Court of the Crimson King as a starter album the problem is that it is much different than Larks because it has a totally differently lineup than that album (Court features saxes, flutes, lots of mellotron, whereas Larks features violin, viola, and more guitar, plus features a different singer and bass player.) A lot of people recommend Red for a starter album because its just guitar, bass, and drums and is really heavy metal. Or I guess you could try for the early 80s version of the band, which is totally different than the other two versions and pick up Discipline, a good album with some really funky beats. I guess it all depends on what kind of music you like, however with KC its hard to go wrong. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jan 1995 02:01:00 +0900 From: Kaoru Kobayashi To: email_address_removed Subject: DT in Kawasaki / Japan Message-ID: Hi! It's one thing to have eclectic tastes, but to force all the jammers to sift through pages upon pages of your "favorites," not to mention using up valuable list space is getting a bit ridiculous. Learn to summarize. My .02 Steve Z ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 1995 14:29:36 -0400 (EDT) From: HEADSTRONG To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: FREE TAPES!! Alice In Chains, Van Halen, KISS, Green Day, Gin Blossoms, Anthrax, Prince, Steven Sondheim, Pop Will Eat Itself, Pearl Jam, Junkyard, Crash Test Dummies, Danny Elfman, Stone Temple Pilots, Extreme, Bob Dylan, Phish, Yes, Rush, Sheryl Crow, Candlebox, Mrrisey, Live, Helmet, Living Colour, White Zombie, Vai...oh yeah, and Dream Theatre. Those are just a few of my favorites, but I like just about anything that has any kind of musical or entertainment merit. By the way, I also have all of Scatterbrain's albums, though I don't count them among my favorites, and I also really like T-Ride's album (did they ever put out another?) And I hilyly reccomend the Planet's to whoever was thinking about it. Nice thread, very interesting. Later, SLAY ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 648 *************************
