Please E-mail me privately. I hope the fact that I live in the UK isn't a problem! Anyway, here's some news from our longest serving rock mag, Kerrang. They've reported that DT will be playing the UK in March, that The Silent Man will be released as a single to co-incide with the tour and... that we should look out for a very special show in London in February! Perhaps this is the 'covers' date talked about earlier. No dates yet but I'll keep my ear to the ground and keep you all posted. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jan 1995 08:00:09 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Jeremy Haynes) To: email_address_removed Subject: My Fave Bands.... Message-ID: Hi, there! Many greetings from a German YTSEJAMmer! Last week something really nice and surprising happened: Dream Theater's "Silent Man" was played on HR3. In the Wednesday show "HR3 - Hard'N'Heavy" they played: Dream Theater - The Silent Man Fates Warning - Pale Fire Queensryche - One More Time and something off the new Helloween album. Really incredible! Too bad this only happens once a year. Any German YTSEJAMmer who feels up to it, please send requests to HR3 - Hard'N'Heavy - featuring "Team T" - Postfach 60222 Frankfurt. Another subject : recommendations : THRESHOLD - WOUNDED LAND I think someone else already mentioned Threshold a few days ago. This is a perfect album for fans of progressive metal. They are really strong in their vocals and their keyboardist fits in really well. They have a newer release - PSYCHEDELICATESSEN - which is out for some weeks now and is reported to be heavier and less progressive - anybody out there already checked it out? I'm gonna get it anyway, 'cause I like "WOUNDED LAND" so much. ANGRA - ANGELS CRY Faster than Threshold, they somehow remind me of Helloween's good old "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" albums. Again, a great vocalist. I also like the orchestration a lot. They also have a symphonic intro - just like Helloween on their "Keeper" albums. I think "Angels Cry" is their only release. TIAMAT - WILDHONEY Tiamat is a former Death-Metal-Band who has become more progressive now - I think that's due to some line-up changes. Some people might remember the discussion about Cynic's "Focus" - THIS is death metal, IMHO, but Tiamat is more progressive and less death metal. Oh, well, I myself still have to get used to their still- a-little-death-metal vocals. Next subject : TOWHTSTS and other acronyms Now everybody knows what TOWHTSTS means, so I like to add a few more: ATCOOBS - albums to check out or buy soon ATBASATAR - albums to buy as soon as they are released To explain this a bit : Threshold's "PSYCHEDELICATESSEN" is on my ATCOOBS-list, whereas the new DT-EP which is going to be released this year (hopefully soon) definitely belongs to the ATBASATAR. TJWILTPH (That's just what I like to post here). B,TCAHF (Bye, take care and have fun) !!! - Andreas - P.S. on the classical music subject : My favorite composer is Beethoven, and I mostly like his symphonies, especially Symphony #6 (Pastorale). Anybody familiar with it? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jan 1995 08:27:27 -0500 (EST) From: William T Bajzek To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Cathedral Message-ID: the UK doom metal band cathedral is pretty cool... kinda like a hippy black sabbath... i mean, a more hippy black sabbath... or maybe less.... they have 'the ethereal mirror' 'soul sacrifice' and, uh, another little ep and another album i think.... so avoiding those would help you narrow it down to the US one. or you can buy them. i think they're pretty cool you know that the blood you shall reap-william email_address_removed is the blood that you shall sow--golgotha--http://www.contrib.andrew. till the rivers run red----symphony in extremis---cmu.edu/u/wb2a/home and there's nothing left at all-arr!-stuff-hahahaha--busy... me? Normally, they have about ten different videos by different bands on a tape, but that month was some sort of special. I believe all the stuff on there was taken from the LiT video. Did they make a video > for CIAW? Was Derek in it?? Did MTV play it at all?? Have I missed > something?? Well, I remember from the 1st show on the tour that they said that they are making/have made a video for CIAW... Of course, it is eMpTyV that we are talking about, so they probably never played it... Another Another Day video, I guess... They _should_ play Silent Man... I mean, they seem to like accoustic tracks... Aarrggh! There are more?! I already accidentally tried the death-metal Cathedral from someplace in Europe I think. I wouldn't wish that on anybody on this list. These guys must be the third. Out of D.C., album released in 1993. Kind of gothic attempt at prog. 8 tracks, 65 minutes, no track shorter than 6:35. Released on the Kinesis label. Offer still stands. When it comes to Classical...and all you fellow Music Theory Buffs will back me up on this one...I have three words: Mozart, Vivaldi, and Wagner! You haven't heard/seen classical music until you've had to analyze their stuff (I thought I'd never survive Theory class!!!). Also for those who mentioned Yanni...I was probably the person you're talking about who's mentioned him on the YTSE...Live at the Acropolis is DEFINETLY Progressive (not metal...but changing time sigs...and killer arrangments with orchestration)...to this day I swear if you mixed Pantera and Yanni you get Dream Theater!!! Also for those who like Piano and cool orchestration...try out David Lanz! More about Yanni..."Live..." is most likely the only CD that would appeal to most JammerZ' (his other stuff is kinda boring)...but it IS a must!!! (No, I don't have any bootlegs...but would like one) I have been lurking for some time, and I noticed that there is some call for transcriptions and stuff. As a kind of overture to my fellow jammers I wanted to list some sightings of DT in music mags, which may be helpful to some of you. If this has been done already, I apologize in advance for the space..... ***GUITAR WORLD (May 93): Pull Me Under - gtr tab. ***MODERN DRUMMER (Aug 93): Feature on Portnoy - drum setup, influences ***BASS PLAYER (Feb 94): Interview with Myung - 2 pgs. ***GFTPM (Mar 94): Takethe Time - gtr and bass tab. good transcript. Petrucci wins "Breakthrough Guitarist" DT wins "Breakthrough Band", "Songwriters of the Year" and I&W gets "Album of the Year". ***GFTPM (Nov 94): Lie - gtr and bass tab. Interview with Petrucci - 8 pgs. ***GUITAR SCHOOL (Nov 94): Myung Bass Clinic - tab for some licks. ***GUITAR SCHOOL (Jan 95): Caught in a Web - gtr and bass tab. ***GUITAR WORLD (Jan 95): Erotomania - gtr and bass tab. That's all for now gang, hope it's not too much! GFTPM has the best transcriptions IMHO, and they love DT. Petrucci writes a monthly column called "Wild Stringdom" (took over from Eric Johnson) in GW. Finally, there's an obscure industry mag in Canada called "MEAT" that praises DT often as well. Anyway, I'm off to get the Feb issues - I understand Petrucci wiped up the awards in GFTPM again....
