At the time, Aaron had just begun to get things together with his own band, Curfew, and wanted to stick with them, so he decided against joining DT. Oddly enough, even Keith Emerson *himself* considered it for about half-a-second, until he realized that all of the band members in DT were young enough to be his sons. ;) >>>Well, I know this is pretty worthless on the whole, but I thought it was kind of random and cool, and my. . . BRUSH... WITH...DT. . . (sort of, in a very roundabout, well, whatever).<<< I found it very interesting myself! :) Keith Emerson has another son who's a keyboardist, eighteen-year-old Damon, so perhaps DT should check him out as well? :) Jennifer "I don't know much about Jesus but I feel the need for a prayer..." From my experience, I've noticed that lots of DT fans, and just progressive rock/progressive metal fans in general, like Tori's music. Of all the concerts I've attended in the Los Angeles area, Tori's have by far had the most diverse crowds I've ever seen. Where else are you going to see Paul Reiser, Eddie Van Halen, Chuck Billy, Tom Arnold and Lonn Friend in the same building? :) I think her aggressive, yet openly emotional music/lyrics/playing style are what attracts a lot of people to her. She's very powerful in what she does, especially live. There are MANY lurking Tori fans here on YJ that I know of (you know who you are :), but perhaps we should all shut up soon to prevent this from becoming the *second* mailing list dedicated to her. ;) (If you'd like to join the *real* Tori mailing list, send a "subscribe" message to "email_address_removed". :) Dom'ny also commented: >>>Tori isn't progressive, but then, some things don't need to be. Must be the keyboardist in me that's so forgiving ;)<<< I would *definitely* consider some of her songs to be progressive, like "Little Earthquakes," "Flying Dutchman," "The Pool," and "Yes Anastasia". And remember, "Upside Down" has *mellotron* on it, the true mark of any brilliant progressive song! ;) I would even go so far as to consider the "Etienne Trilogy" from Tori's mega-flop 1988 album _Y Kant Tori Read_ to be progressive, but that's just me. :) Stephane Auzilleau also mentioned: >>>I talked of that with James La Brie when he was in Paris for the promotion of "Awake" (August 94) and he answered "You know, I am a huge fan of Tori Amos. I love what she does, lyrically and musically. And Kevin loves her too"<<< John Myung's a big Tori fan too, let's not leave him out. :) And James is also a fan of Kate Bush, a British artist I heartily recommend and one that I would definitely consider "progressive" as well. :) Kevin Moore likes Tori's last album, _Little Earthquakes_, a lot better than _Under The Pink_ (as do I), but he did manage to catch her NYC show on March 30, 1994 (my birthday, BTW! :) at Symphony Space. Just thought that little factoid might be of some interest to any YJammers who were there that night and didn't know he was in the audience with them. :) Kevin was definitely the biggest Tori fan in the band. One of Tori's b-sides, an a cappella piece she wrote called "Song For Eric," impressed him so much that he sampled her vocals from the song, then added soundbites and constructed an entire musical piece of his own around it! :) If anyone's keeping track, I currently have Kevin obsessed with Jane Siberry, who's often been called "the Canadian Kate Bush" by the press. :) For all you Fates Warning fans out there, they are *all* obsessed with Sarah McLachlan (another Canadian artist), especially Jim Matheos. :) Sarah and Tori were both just nominated separately for Grammys, BTW, for "best alternative album". My absolute favorite piece is probably the Pachelbel Canon in D, which I'm sure everyone on this list has heard, whether you know it or not. That is one of the most beautiful, inspiring pieces ever. Other favorites include: Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, and many others. I'm not really into opera that much, but there are certain ones that have grown on me and one that I absolutely loved from the start: Orff's Carmina Burana, which is absolutely astounding. Someone mentioned Yanni, whose music I can't pass up saying I also love. The only album I have at present is Live at the Acropolis, but a friend of mine has a few others that I'm going to borrow. His violinist is incredible!! Here's another "new age" artist I would strongly suggest checking out: Enya. Like Yanni, she writes some really beautiful, inspiring music (much different from Yanni's style, though). Recently, in the Dream Theater bulletin board on AOL, I put the question to AOL DT fans: what other music do you listen to? I have noticed that there are Dream Theater fans coming from many different musical genres and I thought it would be interesting to see what other stuff people listened to. I posted a list of some of my favorite stuff, and I'll do it here, too, because someone in the last digest asked the same question. So, here goes! From what you read above, you know I love classical music and the small amount of new age stuff that I'm familiar with. However, much of my background and current interests in music involve heavy stuff, though I think I'm FAR from any kind of stereotypical metal-head. I also like punk, hardcore, industrial, jazz, and lots of other stuff (I really don't like categorizing). Here are just a few of the people that bring me some great music (excluding those above metioned): Alice in Chains, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Corrosion of Conformity, Miles Davis, Dead Kennedys, Dennis Diblasio, Dream Theater, Maynard Ferguson, Fishbone, Genesis, Dizzy Gillespie, GWAR, Infectious Grooves, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Lard, Life Sex and Death, Megadeth, Metallica, Misfits, Ministry, M.O.D., Mutha's Day Out, Nine Inch Nails, Ozzy, Pantera, Primus, Prong, Revolting Cocks, Rollins Band, Rush, Joe Satriani, S.O.D., Soundgarden, Strip Mind, Suicidal Tendencies, Tool, Type O Negative, Uncle Slam, Van Halen, White Zombie and many, many more... Fates Warning, Scorpions (*everything* from 1974 (FTTR) to 1988 (SA), then they went downhill). Everything else includes tons of "classic rock" like Yes, ELP (one of the best concerts I've ever seen, BTW); and Satch, AIC, some Beethoven nad Mozart thrown in for good measure, Golden Earing, hell, since I've gotten into DT, I've forgotten most of my CD collection... I saw Yanni, LATA, on Much Music one night, I'm definitely going to get it. Enya is most excellent, too (good going to sleep music). Oh yeah, get the Pulp Fiction soundtrack! My tastes in music run a large spectrum: New Age (Yanni, Tangerine Dream, Mannheim Steamroller, Shadowfax, George Winston...), jazz (the more traditional stuff - I live in Sacramento, home of the annual international Dixieland Jazz Jubilee!), world music (Gipsy Kings, Yothu Yindi, traditional music from the Andes...), alternative/new wave/modern rock/whatever the heck they're calling it now (New Order, The Cure, Smiths...), "rock" (Pink Floyd, Queensryche, Pretty Maids, Fifth Angel, Fates Warning...) - you get the idea! I'm gradually getting into more and more prog stuff: Marillion, Magellan, Dixie Dregs... And, hey, Al, I'm willing to admit that I'm a Harry Connick fan, too! : ) We wouldn't have Dream Theater if it weren't for the standards! I don't own any of Tori Amos' albums yet, but I've always had a liking for "Silent All These Years." Anyhow, that's an example of the diversity of my tastes... I guess it's my hatred of MTV.....I know of lot of you > 'Jammers are of the same ilk. Just because "Black Hole Sun" was on every 10 minutes does not make it a bad song, nor does it make Soundgarden a "sellout". Blame it on MTV, not the artists. If you don't like the music, fine. Don't buy it. My solution: don't watch MTV. I have found more good music through sources _other_ than MTV, than _from_ MTV. Yes, I own copies of Green Day and Offspring albums, but it's because I _enjoy_ them, not because they're the flavor of the week. The only drawback is you _will_ occasionally buy something you don't like. But at least you'll have the individuality to say so. Which leads into my next subject. I recently found a cd copy of "There in the Shadows" by Cathedral. I have seen some strong recommendations of this band, on this list I'm sure. I can't stand it. So, if anybody is interested, let's say US$10 will get it to you in the US priority mail. Anybody outside the US willing to cover the shipping difference is also welcome to it. There are three US bands called Cathedral so you have to be careful when you buy Cathedral albums :-/ One band is a metal band that I've heard compared to Black Sabbath. Kerrang! supposedly gave them a good review, but I haven't heard them. Another one is a progressive rock band from the 70's. Then there's a progressive rock band that is currently together which is putting out stuff. The two prog ones are mentioned in Syn-phonic's catalog which, unfortunately, is not readily accessible (I don't know if you noticed, but earlier this week arastar.com was down for almost 16 hours because my living room (where this computer lives) flooded (well, a 6x4 sq ft area did).
