Favorite pieces are Pictures at an Exhibition, Ride of the Valkries, Danse Macabre, Bolero, Night on Bald Mountain, The Planets, and bunches of other stuff I'm forgetting at the moment. > I'd be interested to try out some new > styles and make my tape collection more complete. I like complex, intense > and sometimes dark music. Does anyone have suggestions? Pictures at an Exhibition (Mussorgsky) is in my opinion a must-have. You also might want to check out The Planets (Holst), or maybe some sampler-type thing like Heavy Classix to find out the names of some composers who appeal to you. > It would be interes- > ting to see what ytsejammers listen to, apart from Dream Theater. > Also, just a thought: what if DT had a full symphonic orchestra at their > disposition? I don't know...I think DT are pretty orchestral on their own. It would be interesting to hear but I don't think it would be all that much of an improvement. Like Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's Unledded project (with the big eastern ensemble and stuff) was pretty cool but I don't think it was in any way better than the original Zeppelin. And to throw in my opinion of Tori: excellent musician, highly recommendable. Very, very mellow in comparison with DT, though. -max ------------------- Anton Max Keyboards, Aepithex MadMax+@CMU.EDU ------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Jan 1995 11:56:09 -0600 (CST) From: text string To: email_address_removed Subject: To Live Forever Message-ID: Date sent: 6-JAN-1995 11:47:52 I just got the import single for Lie and was deeply disappointed in the length of To Live Forever. When they did this live in '93 they were stretching it to 9 minutes in length during the later part of the tour and on the single it's only about 4 minutes. Christ, I hope they don't take the 20 minute ACOS and reduce that down as well when they record that this year. I guess Fates Warning are playing some dates with the guys in Europe. I e-mail Metal Blades Records begging for more tour dates (especially my state of Wisconsin....Go Packers) and they said they won't be in the states until after March. (After the DT European tour) I wonder if they'll continue touring with them over here. All I know is I won't have to sit through I Mother Earth again. My favourite classical CDs are... Vivaldi - The Four Seasons No CD collection is complete without this. This runs the gamut from spring frivolty and love to summer rain, to the autumn harvest and feast, to the winter, which begins in December as a family affair, and quickly turns to desolation and despair before leaving us with a bit of hope for the spring. All composed beautifully and played very well on my particular disc by the LSO. Beethoven's 5th Not as complete-sounding a work as TFS, but this is definitely a symphony that gives you an adrenaline rush, not to mention being the work that 99% of all music listeners will recognize at least the very beginning of. Listen to the rest: it's cool. Beethoven's 9th The end of this is the part you'll recognize: the fourth movement "Ode to Joy/Chorus". But he first movement is the best "Allegro Non Troppo." There was even an anime' (Japanimation) video released by that title that was quite a trip. It's sort of an emotional rollercoaster.. the closest thing Beethoven ever wrote, to "hippie drug music". And now, not technically classical, but some of my favourite classical-genre discs overall... George Winston (solo piano) Autumn This is the best solo piano album made ever, period. Buy it. Also as you listen to it, notice the Dream Theater, Steve Vai and Chris Degarmo riffs that they probably based upon VERY similar sounding parts of "Autumn". Winston plays the piano masterfully, and the seven tracks on this are so touching and powerful you'll wonder why you didn't already own this CD. George Winston (solo piano) Winter into Spring, December, Forest These are Winston's other three good albums, Forest being a new release with damn near 75 minutes of music (I like it!!) None quite has the pure... gravity... of Autumn.. but all are worthy albums. Andres Segovias (solo classical guitar) "My Favourites" After listening to this guy, you'll think John Petrucci is a greenhorn. I can't figure out how this maestro from Spain plays a single guitar and makes it sound like four guitars playing separate parts at blinding speed. It's definitely mandatory listening for all prog-rock fans, so they can put their "XXX Guitarist is GOD!" conviction to rest. Not only that, it's very pleasant listening. Nothing like that crap you hear at Mexican restaurants. REAL good music. Star Wars Original Score with John Williams and the Boston Pops This 2-CD set is another mandatory one... it's Star Wars! And it's the _whole thing_. Play this one in your car and during the space battle themes you'll SWEAR a tie fighter is going to jump out in front of you at any moment! :) Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves original soundtrack The best movie soundtrack since Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Truly thrilling themes and strong, heavy bass drive this soundtrack. It's the perfect background music for playing Dungeons 'n Dragons. Last of the Mohicans original soundtrack The best movie soundtrack since Robin Hood. Also probably the best overall at using unusual instruments and making a compelling series of songs with them. > Also, just a thought: what if DT had a full symphonic orchestra at their > disposition? Not just like the "A Classic Case" series, where an orchestra > interprets some of the band's greatest hits: here the band would actually > write the songs with the orchestra in mind, and perform along with it. Guess she is not for all Prog fans and metalheads. Her live material really is a whole different thing from her studio albums, just her and a piano. Really all she needs. Classical music, Holst, Sousa (I was in marching band for too many years), Tchaikovsky, Mozart, are my favorites. Does anyone have the double New York 1994 boot yet. I heard someone mention it in conversation a couple of days ago and he said that this guy who sells boots was shipping it out soon. I picked up Threshold the other day and it is greatly impressing me. I would definitely recommend this to Dream Theater fans. I also got a band called Syrinx who has the musical styling of late 70's Rush mixed with a Dutch vocalist. Mail me if you want info or an address to pick these up. What other bands are your five favorites. I just wanted to see since I find a huge diversity in musical tastes when trading with people from the list. Mine Are: 1. Rush 2. Pink Floyd 3. Yes 4. King Crimson 5. Marillion They are the bigs ones, there are several smaller bands that I love but most of them only have one album so I cannot claim that I like a wide range of their stuff, with these bands I like more than 90% of their material. Well, if you like darker and moodier classical pieces, try some Bach (assuming you haven't already). A good starter might be Toccata & Fugue (sp?) in D minor. Just can't beat that piece... :) Also, get Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"; it's a real gem, and quite listenable. Message-ID: Hello to all the Ytsejammers out there. I've been lurking in the shadows in READ ONLY mode for several months now - it's time to say hello and post something: My name is Clarke Woodfin and I'm a computer network administrator. I'm 28 years old - my hobbies include: playing bass guitar, bicycling, ice and street hockey, and listening to a lot of music. I'm married and have 2 children (two girls, one is 18 months old and one is 2 months old) A good friend (who also plays bass) introduced me to DT about a year ago. I went out and got I&W and I've been hooked ever since. I got Awake the day it came out and I got to see DT in concert in Baltimore back in November. Killer show. I want to thank all the Yjammers who have kept us up on concert info, release dates, etc. It was because of YJam that I got the early scoop on Baltimore tickets. I've also been able to learn about a lot of other cool bands like Fates Warning, Galactic Cowboys, etc. DT is definitely my favorite band, but I'm also into Rush, Kansas, Queensryche, Dixie Dregs, King's X, Fates Warning (I'm actually listening to Inside Out as I'm typing this), and a lot of Christian bands as well. In fact, the spirtual element of DT is one of the things I like about them the most. Someone asked about classical favorites- Holst (The Planets) is a good one. Anybody got any jazz favorites? I like Pat Metheny, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Stanley Jordan, etc. I pride myself on having diverse musical tastes and having a diverse collection. Most people look through my CD collection and scratch their heads. Dream Theater? who are they? Dixie Dregs? Bela Fleck? I just smile. I'm proud of the fact that my collection lacks the "industry approved" bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. I don't really mind their music, but I just can't tolerate the idea of actually paying money for their CDs. I guess it's my hatred of MTV.....I know of lot of you 'Jammers are of the same ilk. Have a great year everyone.
