Where?? I assume these don't have RCA inputs. If you want to tape shows, I recommend RCA inputs, because that will get you into almost any soundboard with the right patch cables. Also, a recorder with RCA inputs usually takes microphone inputs better. The walkman really doesn't tape well at all. The cheapest small portable with RCA's I have seen is over $200. Digital- if you are going to go buy equipment now, starting from scratch -buy DAT!!! - It has come way down in price. Wholesalers sell portable DAT's in catalogs for $599. When you buy good analog equipment, you spend nearly that much - so digital isn't far away - and the tapes last longer. Only thing is that DAT tapes are expensive, but again - they are dropping in price everyday and bulk orders from wholesalers get great prices. I have a number for mailorder tapes - I have seen no lower prices (i.e. Maxell XLII-90s - $1.29 - XLII-S's - $1.59 or $1.79, I forget) They have DAT too. Minidisc - I think a balnk minidisc holds about 74minutes, and they are near $10 apiece, so DAT is still more economical. A DAT tape is usually a 3 or 6 hour affair - also saves space in your archives, which becomes a consideration when you have a million shows. Now some bands don't allow DAT. I am not sure of the taping interests of most on this net. It sounds like a SBD patch at a DT show doesn't happen. But there are other bands who allow board patches, so that;s what I am basing my experience on. I also happen to know someone who talked to members of the Black Crowes about taping, and it looks like SBD patches will beallowed at their shows, if you know who to talk to. They've always been cool about taping. So with all this talk of some members of DT hating bootlegs, and others being cool with it, does DT officially allow taping? If so, SBD's or audience? If they don't allow it, I'd like to know how some of your tapes are, since covert recording is always lower in quality than a good shotgun mike setup perfectly placed and undisturbed. With all the tapes that seem to be out there, I was making assumptions. Anyone want to fill in those of us who are newer and unsure of DT's policy, and where the master tapes come from that get bootlegged? Sorry for the length, but I've seen really really long posts here before, so I assumed it wasn't a big problem. Merry Christmas to all on the list. Just a few things that I need to ask: 1. With all the talk about recording DT shows, I'd just like to know how someone goes about making a sound board bootleg. I absolutely love Lost In The Sky, but I'm oblivious as to how someone walks into a show like that and just patches into DT's sound board. 2. Are there any decent CD boots (hopefully soundboard) from the Awake tour yet? 3. I'm interested in getting the vinyl Lie single (VERY interested), but the local music store around here that can usually order me *anything* (which so far has been LITS, DoE, Japaneese Awake, and the UK Lie CD single) can't seem to get it. I'd hate to have to ask anyone to buy me one, let me reimburse them, and then attempt to get it to the states in one piece. Any ideas? 4. Somebody in France, I think, said about a week ago that he could get copies of I&W and Awake on vinyl. I know the message was intended for someone else, but I WANT IT ALL!!! :-) It would really make Christmas complete if I saw a message in my mailbox in a couple days with an answer to this one. I collect a lot of vinyl just for the novelty of it, and I&W and Awake on vinyl would just do it for me. 5. Finally -- where's all the Kevin Moore News I was so used to quite a few months ago? I'm starting to feel we've lost touch with an important part of DT's musicianship. I'm really looking forward to any and all solo projects he embarks on. Again -- Merry Christmas to one and all! I spent a few hours last night and finally got all of my boots together in a nice list. Please mail me if you would like to see a copy. I didn't wanna clog up the whole digest with it. It has lots of cool DT stuff ( not alot of regular live shows but alot of the rare, out of the ordinary stuff ), a few Fates shows, one Cynic audio and one Extreme video. CHeck it out! Is there someone on the Ytsejam that will be able to tape this possible pay-per-view show that is going to be in Japan? I'm sure many Jamers would be interested. Also, has anyone else heard more about the possible "all covers" show? I'm hoping to get a copy of this. Someone said something about the band wanting to record it for future use. This means that somewhere , there will be some good soundboard recordings floating around. ************************************************************************** * Jason Hartman "I am the Killing Hand!" email_address_removed * * * * You're fighting the weight of the world, * * and no one can save you this time. * * Close your eyes - you can find all you need in your mind. * * * * "Take the Time" - Dream Theater * ************************************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Dec 1994 22:49:56 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: I&W & Awake Message-ID: I think that IAW is better than Awake mainly because of two things. One because it is more progressive. With songs like Metroplis and Take the Time which totally focus on the instruments IAW just buries Awake. Another thing is the over all mood. IAW and words was a very "happy" uplifting album which is a chage from everything now-a-days. Awake is much more depresssing just like most of the music out there. Just my 2 cents. They are now playing slightly more energetic (and newer) stuff, especially at night, much to the deejays' delight. They recently added, e.g., Green Day, Corrosion of Conformity and QR's "The Bridge," so there may be hope for Dream Theater on the radio here after all! Requests for DT material from AWAKE can be made to 404-741-9696. Calling at night is fine, but calling during the day might get more attention from their programming folks. On that note, their office number is 325-0960, program director is Michael Hughes. Short of dragging the upper muckity-mucks out to listen to AWAKE, I don't know how to get them to -listen- to it; I have given an extra cassette to one deejay friend of mine there, who is now muttering "Six-o-clock on a Christmas morning!" in his sleep. :) Because of 96rock's format change, this is the best time in quite a while to try and have them play DT. If you're local to Atlanta -- hell, even if you aren't! -- please support the band as much as you can. -- ............. Paul W. Cashman email_address_removed ................... I will add some of my own opinions and observations... I would like to first mention that Awake is an INCREDIBLE album. It has incredible rhythm, power and time changes. It has an interesting cohesiveness to it. BUT... I would have to say, Images and Words distances Awake by a shot. I&W has a progressiveness and feel to it which no other album ever made by any other band has even came close to. It is also far more technical then Awake, which I like a lot. I&W is a masterpiece. A musical menage of progressiveness. When I listen to Awake and then I&W, I can't help to think of two different bands. The more down to earth, crunching Awake and the more sophisticated, complex I&W... While songs on Awake such as Scarred, Space Dye Vest, and A Mind Beside Itself outshine any song written by any other progressive rock/metal band, songs such as Metropolis, Under a Glass Moon, TTT, Learning to Live are pure MONUMENTS (Fates Warning - Inside Out)... :) -The Doc -- #$%*#$*@ REAL: email_address_removed + VIRTUAL: email_address_removed *@#$*@#$ *$%&%#$* The Dream Theater Archives: ftp.netcom.com: /pub/dr/drkhoe/dt &*@#$*@$ **%^$#$% WWW: "ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/dr/drkhoe/www/dthome.html" #$**@#*$ *$*$*$*# Reality Enhancement Software - Engineering Reality *$&#*#@$ ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 626 *************************
