They played in a small club because there were'nt enough tix sold for the much larger coliseum. Anyway, it was just like seeing them like I kdid two years ago at Club 101. The sound was so incredible and I was so close! NOthing like hearing Metropolis from so close with such a pure sound! But what was even more outstanding was that, thanks to C-Man, I received a pair of Back-stage passes! Hardest part was choosing who would get the other pass. There wasn't much of a "backstage" so my friend and I just kind of hung out as they tore down the stage afterwards. After about half-an hour, James comes out! Man, he was so cool. We talked for about a minute about the show, thanksgiving, the tour... it was great! I was in Heaven. Anyway, he autographed a few things for us and off he went to get some sleep (he sounded really tired when we talked to him). Then, John P. came out, but before we could get to him, he was on the phone and didn't get off for over an hour (we left before he did get off the phone). We managed to talk to Mike P lastly. He too, was incredibly cool and apologized for us having to wait so long. The ohter John and Derrick had already gotten on the bus. Man, what a night!! One I won't forget.. Thanks to C-Man for the passes. I've never had any before so this was a new experience for me--one I want to relive several times over! Why are they going to release that song ? It's the (only) bad song on the album, I think In my opinion they are selling their soul for radio-time (money?) It's a pity. The concert was everything that I had hoped it would be. Small venue, killer spots on the barricade (right below JP!) and the backstage passes from C man worked out! (Thanks again!!!) Fates Warning was very good...I had never heard them before. The drummer was great, setting off so many triggers for chimes, bass, etc. He was more like a drummer/keyboardist! Then came DT, the men, the myths. The only foul-up was that Myung's bass went out in the middle of Lifting Shadows Off A Dream...What a terrible song for the bass to go out, since the whole outro rides on the bass. Talking to Derrick after, he said "Yeah, I was just trying to hit as many low keys as I could" So then comes the great part. I met all of them backstage, got 3 sets of autographs. Everybody on the front of my Ytsejam shirt...looks very cool. And everybody except Derrick on the I&W and Awake panoramic pictures. Talking to them was great, all were VERY cool. Derrick has many relatives in the Bay Area, where I'm from, including San Mateo and Foster City. I asked him how he liked playing progressive stuff, compared to the likes of Kiss and Alice Cooper (He was surprised that I knew that about him!) He enjoys the progressive stuff a lot, much more challenging, he enjoys working with such talented musicians, and likes all of the personalities. Next was Portnoy. GREAT GUY!!! My friend gave him a copy of his tape to which he replied..."Cool, thanks! I'll pop it in my walk-man on the bus tonight, because it gets so boring." After I talked to him about my friend that he filmed for the LiT video, and mentioned that he'd be at the SF show, he pointed at my shirt and said, "Tell everyone on Ytsejam I said hi!" So, everyone, Mike says "HI!" I gave him our address, just in case he wanted to pop on himself. Next was John Myung. As someone posted earlier, he is VERY intimidating to talk to. I commented on the performance, that I was sorry about the techincal difficulty that night, how much the IRC conference was appreciated, and all he every did was nod, say thanks a few times. Got 3 autographs, though. Then came Petrucci. He was the coolest of the five guys, I thought. I gave him a copy of the God/Petrucci story that someone posted earlier, and he mentioned that in Houston they got a stack of papers from Ytsejam, and he thought he remembered this story. Thanked me for it, though. Then I asked him whether or not the riff in Scarred was conciously taken from the Wheel of Fortune theme. He started laughing and said, "Is that what it's from? I thought it was The Price Is Right! No, it was just something that we wrote, and it ended up sounding like something else." He was very modest about his amazing talent and seemed like a very honest guy. Lastly, we got to James. I was going to ask him about the rumor someone started about him teaming up with Sebastian Bach, but when I mentioned Ytsejam, he said "Yeah, I have to take the internet with a grain of salt." So I felt instantly stupid. We talked to him a bit about upcoming tour schedules, and he said that they plan to go to Europe after the New Year, then look into the possibility of opening up for bigger acts. He said that he was uncomfortable about playing with the set to fit a 45 minute time block, so nothing has been set in stone. Colin and I went home happy campers, despite the speeding ticket I received going back to Boulder. Oh well! David and Alan, It was great meeting you, and I'm sorry you guys didn't get to come back with us, but maybe next time. Ciao, fellow Ytsejammers! Adam Bertapelle email_address_removed p.s. For those of you who made it this far into my long post, KBPI will be airing their DAT recording of the concert at 10:00 tonight. I'll be recording it, if anybody wants to work out a trade! You never get to experience the sound of their voice or the smile from their mouth after saying, "That's sounds incredible, let me hear more." My prayers are with you Jason, your family, and for your grandfather, may he rest in heaven with the souls and soulful playing of other great musicians and fans of times past. I am very much looking forward to the show. Is there any pre-show information you could give me? Anything I should know about before the show. How do I get DT merchandise? I really like the new album. I can't describe how cool the new album is. It (as well as I&W) has really helped me make it through the really difficult days. The live album is cool too, I like hearing LaBrie sing DT's older songs, and I like what they have done to improve some of their songs. Keep up the good work DT. I read in Bass Player (I think) that John Myung's biggest influence is now Tony Levin . For those of you unfamiliar with Tony Levin, he plays on the 80's King Crimson stuff, and also appears on Pink Floyd's AMLOR album, ABWH, Yes - Union, World Gone Strange by Andy Summers, and several Peter Gabriel albums. He is known for his amazing bass playing and his use of the unusual instrument - The Stick.
