Second, I was wondering if anyone else out there from the East Bay is going to the show? I've been told that the Warfield is in kind of a sucky area, and being new to the area (and California, and anywhere west of Iowa, to be honest!), I'm not real keen on trekking around at night trying to find the place. So, anyone out there interested in carpooling? I can provide a car and/or gas $$$. Let me know... Oh yeah, I'm in Oakland, BTW. I think your definition of poser and mine must be quite different. I have _no_ intention of flaming _anyone_ here, but the term 'poser' to me was always reserved for bands (Poison, et all) that were hired for their face or because they 'fit the costume' (anybody here ever watch the Brady Bunch? hehe...). Whether or not they had talent was of secondary importance at best. If the record companies were lucky they might stumble onto someone that had talent as well as a face, but who cared as long as there were 13-year-old girls out there getting allowances. I think that LaBrie is the most talented vocalist to be ripped from the unforgiving tendrils of opera and Broadway theater, to find a home in Rock and Roll in my lifetime. For too many years if you didn't have much talent at least there was RnR. That has changed because of bands like Rush, Yes and now DT and I think that DT is as lucky to have LaBrie as LaBrie is to have them. Perfect marriage IMHO. >Hardly. Maybe in the past, but now he is quite impressive, especially I agree. In the IRC interveiw Mike seemed to imply that they had some production/pr folks breathing on them a bit to make it big with that album and it seems like LaBrie, being the newest addition would have the most pressure on him and it would follow, the most direction. I think any 'poser' traits he might have had were probably more a function of what the producers wanted. I haven't seen any of those traits displayed in Live in Tokyo (the only live stuff I've seen, unfortunately) >"weakest point of DT" ???? I really don't think they have a weak point. Insert *hi-five* here... >And the breathing into the mic in Surrounded et al is a great way of >making the vocals softer and more tender. Given, it is slightly overdone >at times, but it creates a nice mood, and makes a strong contrast to the >rest of the song. Yeah, I'm sure there are folks that would call Geoff Tate a poser for his _very_ dramatic approach to his live performances, but I think that's exactly what the band wants to portray live and I think he does it well. I guess it all depends on your interperetation... >G-Man Ok, it was too long. Sorry, I'll shut up now. The group's stylized approach and long, long songs are an acquired taste, but Awake offers plenty of heavy and haunting moments as well as superb musicianship. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Nov 1994 11:47:11 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: DREAM THEATER Message-ID: The grestest song writers in the music business. Isn't that where a lot of Mike's home video was shot? DT vs Danzig. Hmm... the greatest band on the planet or an Elvis impersonator on steroids. Not much of a choice. And WHAT is up with them playing in shitholes that hold 200 people?????? I know that crowds and tastes vary across the country, but come on. I know it took Rush a LONG time to develope their following, but where are the 10k - 15k fans that pack all their shows. I know - at home on NMS typing in things like 'DT is no better than any other Rush cover band'. ARRRGGHHH!!!!!! When will DT get the respect (and the crowds) they deserve? Wow, I'm stumped. I fell in love with Labrie's voice as soon as I heard I&W, and he is currently my favorite vocalist. This guy is wonderful! That breathing that you hate; well, to me, it sounds soothing and heartfelt. I think you're missing the point. The whole damn point. Man. > And the guy posting something about looking like Fabio is > absolutely right. He was, is , and always will be a poser. _I_ was the guy that said that his album photo looked like Fabio, and I didn't mean it in a bad way. He is in no way a poser. Watch him live and in the videos: He only has one move, and that is to rock back and forth on the balls of his feet. Hardly the actions of a poser. Watch Brett Micheals sometime and compare. By the way, I just LOVE WDADU, and I don't even mind Chuck's vocals, in context. To me, it's just another part of my Dream Theater collection. I don't make priorities for them. I'm just happy to have three albums of the stuff. Just the first of many responses, I'm sure Toodles! Aslo commenting on the Dominici thread. I like WDADU alot.... I don't like it as much as I&W or Awake but it is still great. The main reason that I don't like it as much is because of the production. It sounds really muffeled and not as clear as the other 2 albums. Charlie is not a bad singer but i agree with what someone else said that he doesn't put as much feel and emotion in it as james does. just my 2 cents. -mark ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 588 *************************
