First, what is DT_INTERACTIVE? Second, how do I get it? I mean, I got into /pub/music/dt through ftp, but when I try to GET it, I'm told that it is not a "plain" file. Well, that pretty much stumps me. I'm really sorry if this is an obvious question, but I just need a bit o' guidance. Thanks. Also, has any info on Awake been added to the FAQ? I have been off Ytsejam since May, and got Awake before I re-subscribed, so I kind of missed out on any discussion surrounding it. Finally, does DT ever tour California (since that is now where I have the fortune [?] of being)? E-mail me if you can help. Thanks a million! I could never relay his thoughts & feelings about the notes that all of you sent to him more eloquently than he did himself, so I'll just get out of the way now & let Kevin do the talking. :) Here are some excerpts from his letter: "I received your package two weeks ago and would have written to you earlier had it not inspired me to devote all of my waking hours to writing. I did try to call you that evening though, but no one answered. I probably wouldn't have known exactly what to say anyway. Suffice to say I was surprised and deeply touched simultaneously, which could only lead to the mountains, through which I drove for the next few hours of daylight. Those letters jolted me out of limbo and set a fire under my ass (if you will). Not only was I moved by each one of those letters, but I was amazed that someone would put something like that together for me. It's really beautiful, Jen, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my comparatively puny heart. It is without question the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me (topping the time at Fredonia when my roommate received three letters and I none, and he gave me one of his). It was a very introspective day for me. It made me think about my music, where I wanted to go with it, where I've been with it, etc., and I felt very peaceful and centered. The reason I'm stressing the state of mind I was in that day is because it was a huge contrast to the following day. That weekend my grandmother passed away. It was tough for me because I'd never been through that before. She had accepted her fait, and my cousin and I were to fly out the following day to see her, but she died that morning in her sleep. I don't think it made it any easier, but those letters at least gave me something positive to think of during a very dark and confusing week. So, once again, thanks." And my thanks once again to everyone who wrote to Kevin. You've all touched my heart more than words can express and you have obviously made quite a difference in his life. :) Elsewhere in his letter, he told me about the new songs he's completed & demoed at home, five in all, and he's working on new ideas constantly. The titles of the finished tracks are "Blanket", "Hollow", "Roll Away The Stone", "Nora" and "Shallow". And, yes, as reported on this list recently, Rich Kern is indeed handling all of the guitar work on the songs. Kevin also commented on some of the ideas behind the songs. The lyrics of "Nora" were inspired by a letter he read that was written by James Joyce to his wife, Nora. Of "Shallow" he says, "this was to fulfill an unfulfilled need to write and record a decent song in one day. Took a week and is only halfway decent. Good clean fun, however." :) "Hollow" is Kevin's first attempt at bass-playing and the lyrics are a sarcastic look at the "buying-and-selling" of Christianity. His personal take on that is, "basically I don't want to be saved considering the currently available means of salvation." Questions and comments are welcome, as usual. :) If anyone else would like to send Kevin mail, I have his new, home address now and would be more than glad to continue forwarding letters to him if you e-mail them to me. The moment I hear anymore new news, so will you. Thanks again, to everyone. :) Take care, Jennifer ___________________________________________________ air email_address_removed email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Nov 1994 13:13:32 C From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: RE: *** EXTRA YTSEJAM SHIRTS *** Message-ID: >I have 6 XL Black shirts that I ordered as extra's which just showed up >today. Message-ID: O.k., normally I would just let this thread die, but I think I need to clarify what I started. I don't have a problem with asking the band specific questions. I DO have a problem with the nature of some of those questions. Two recent examples I've seen here: Everyone on this list should know 2 things from reading all the digests - Mike took Kevin's departure very hard and Petrucci has a strong dislike for boots. Therefore, asking Mike anything about Kevin or asking Petrucci something about, say, Mission Impossible (something that could have only come from a boot or demo) do not make fans look smooth and knowledgable - they make them look insensitive. I'm just leary that if the band's patience are tried enough times, there will no longer be the opportunity to talk to them at all. Mike P ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 15:24:19 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Chicao show - no spoilers Message-ID: I have never been a big fan of James' live performances, but he seems to have left his scream at home this time around. His voice was DEVASTATING. He did not miss a thing, and his whole stage presence seems much looser now. If you would have told me before the show that I would have spent the most time watching him, I would have called you crazy, but he really was amazing. So was Derek. His improv ability was impressive as well. Someone mentioned on an earlier digest that, even though Derek is very capable, there was something missing without Kevin. I would argue the opposite. I never cared for Kevin's deadpan too much (although his playing was awesome) - whereas Derek and Petrucci spent the better portion of the evening trading stupid grins. The band looked like they were having a good time playing with him, and I think the crowd knew that. Also, I'm usually very annoyed when someone next to me is belting out lyrics during the entire show loud enough for me to hear better than the actual singer. But when it's the entire audience, I thought it was really cool. I've been to a lot of shows, including DT, and have not really seen this happen to the degree that it did last night. I'm not kidding - I think the crowd sang every damn word. I also really liked I Mother Earth. What was up with the auxillary percussionist? Man, that guy is nuts. The whole band sounded like Miami Sound Machine on crack. Latin heavy metal? I thought they really grooved hard. Mike P ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Nov 1994 15:24:28 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Chicago show - spoilers Message-ID: The band did not play Set the Sun - nor anything from WDADU. That may be because the show was running a little behind, but I don't know. It was raining, so I didn't stick around to ask them why. They also muffed the beginning of Another Day again. Actually, I'm glad they did - other than one of Mike's cymbals falling off the kit during Metropolis (actually a tech pulled it off after the stand gave way) the Another Day flub provided the nights funniest moment, because when they started the song over, as the band played the opening, James said "Some of you may recognize this part" and the audience laughed.
