Once again the band has outdone themselves. This is the second time I have seen them live and they continue to impress. I was down on the floor on Myung's side near the overhang on the floor. Great view of the band, better then when I saw them at Pier Six, though HammerJack had about 200 people more than fire limit I would guess. (Money, Money, etc...) Well, as you all know, I Mother Earth is still opening for them. I really didn't know what to think, some of their instrumental stuff was really great though I won't know if the singer is any good til I hear the album, he had to yell to be heard over the guitars. Dream Theater came on about 9:00 and here is the set list... Pull Me Under 6:00 Take the Time / Classical Jam w Piano Solo / Take the Time Caught in a Web/ Drum Solo/ Caught in a Web The Ones Who Help To Set the Sun Lifting Shadows Off a Dream Mirror/Lie Another Day A Mind Beside Itself Encore: Metropolis This order is close, I may have Another Day and Lifting Shadows misplaced. But these are the songs. Other Notes: The mix was pretty good, I could hear everyone pretty well, though it was of course very loud. Petrucci still is using the Faces guitar. Portnoy is a madman, he must have the stamina of a decathalon runner. James' voice is still in good shape, though it is early in the tour, I hope he is still this strong in April when they hit the East coast again. Myung does some incredible bass work. I was comparing his ability to some of the other bass players I have seen and he is certainly a great, up there with Levin, Squire, and others. Anybody else see the girl in the low cut red leather dress on Myungs side near the back, if you didn't you missed another great concert highlight. Later, Mike email_address_removed P.S. Message-ID: No, they're not going to be guests or anything - at least not yet, but the coolest thing happened this morning: I'm driving to school and listening to the Howard Stern show (for those overseas, he is a radio talk show guy who broadcasts all over the country - very popular, at least in New York, Cleveland, and Los Angeles). Anyway, after commercials, the show resumes with a brief 1-minute intro. that says "We're back with the Howard Stern Show" with various music in the background, things like Porno for Pyros, Nine Inch Nails, and many others... Well, the kicker today was that the commercials ended and the intro. began - WITH PUP (THE BEGINNING OF THE MIRROR) IN THE BACKGROUND!!!!!! The song started, and then you hear Howard go "Yeah!" and he started to play drums on his control board with his hands - he really seemed very into it..... This was the first time it was played as the back- ground and then Howard said, "Who are these guys - they kick" So then one of his partners (Fred) says "Dream Theater".... Howard then replies, "What?! Green Theater?" (i thought it was funny)...Anyway, Howard says, "Wow, these guys sound angry...." (another thing i thought was funny).... His other partner (Robin) then goes "Yeah, these guys sound pretty good." So Howard then replies, " Wanna hear some more of it" - and then he started playing the rest of the Mirror - about 2 minutes of it....when the keyboards came in though, it went downhill from there.....they all started hacking on the song (from the keyboard coming in) and in particular the keyboardist...They basically said that it didn't fit into the song and stuff like that....the kicker was when Fred said "tell him to go back to Spandau Ballet" - which was kinda uncalled for, but funny anyway.....then everything kinda snowballed from there, to the point where they started saying they suck and stuff like that, but then again they heard about 2 minutes of the song..... Then Howard whips out the "Awake" CD and starts playing little clips of the beginnings of 6:00, CiaW, and IF....then he says "What - are these guys all instrumental - no vocals?" Of course he didn't give any of the songs a chance really, but I don't know - I'll probably call up the station and talk to one of their interns (Stuttering John, who has his own album out) and try and see if they can get more of DT in their intros at the least, maybe even guests when they come around again later on (I heard someone in DT was a fan of theirs).... Well anyway, they spent about 5 minutes or so on Dream Theater, which is unheard of for hearing about a 10 second clip of their music....I've heard Howard ask who certain bands were from hearing the clips, but he never spent that much time on it, let alone break out the CD..... Even though he started trashing them, I think that it was VERY cool that DT has debuted in yet another place besides the metal stations and stuff like that...... Needless to say, the show was amazing, as always. I got an o.k. spot upstairs next to spot #1, and later moved to sit on the spot platform itself. The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun was incredible. Although, I noticed that Der[rick|ek] was not playing during that one. They also had a bit of a technical problem just before they started Lifting Shadows off A Dream, but it was only momentary, and everything else went just fine. No mis-hits of the sample key or anything. ;-) The mix was great until I moved to next to the spot, thus placing me right in front of the uppermost speakers on the right, so now I've got concert-ear in my right ear. One thing to note, is that a lot of people have been quoting Der[rick|ek]'s last name as Sheridan. It is indeed Sheridian. This was how James introduced him and was verified after the show. Speaking of after the show, I was surprised with how long James was out signing stuff for people. It was by far the largest crowd of autograph hunters I had ever seen for them, which made it somewhat disappointing for those of us who just wanted to say hi to people we hadn't seen in a while. The perils of growing popularity I guess. John P. was out for a tad longer than James, and a friend who went with us gave him (as she does at every show), and few dozen choloate chip cookies, which of course doesn't help his gut any, but I didn't see any sign of a gut on him at all last night, so eitehr others are smokin' some good stuff and not sharing, or he's rid himself of it. I did get Der[rick|rek]'s autograph, since I had not seen him before and didn't have it yet. John Myung was escorted through the crowd and didn't sign anything at all. A few rude folks started shouting "What about our autographs? We've been waiting for long enough!" Get a grip people... Anyway, Der[rick|rek] was very cool. He is very interested in making this a permanent arrangement, and when I commented on how, while I was disappointed by Kevin's departure, from what I heard last night, he has filled in the void more than adequately, he said "Cool, tell the other guys that!" Which I did (well, except John M. of course...). Mike made everyone wait, did come out once the crowd was down to about 40 people, signed some stuff, and we chatter with his wife while he did so. She and Rena have both recently joined another band (3 weeks old). No name yet, though she did promise to get info on them trickled to the net once names, tours, etc. get worked out. She actually remembered at least hearing about us, from all the shows we've been to, including the infamous Rochester Blizzard Show '93. Mike finally finished up, and made to run away, spotted us and made his police escort stop and wait while he chatted. Ender had already given him a ticket from the show via Vinny (their sound engineer), and made Ender promise to stop spending the extra cash, since their new tour manager is now making sure to get tickets from every show for him. He was bummed that we weren't going show-hopping this year like we did last tour, but schedules, and show locations jsut aren't allowing it this year. Maybe when they come back around the East coast next April or May. So, anyway, any of you folks at the show tonight, if you see Mike or John P., tell them the guys from DC said "hey!" and that if they play a show around Christmas on the East coast, they can count on us being there. I've only been buying CD's for about two years now, and I've noticed that many CD's have "Bonus Tracks" on them. These are typically songs that are not included on the cassette version of the release. I used to see this often; way back when CD's were "the new thing". The record companies did this to sell more CD's (and to sell the consumer on the concept of Compact Discs). This, in my opinion, was unfair. I didn't have a CD player, and I couldn't hear the Bonus Tracks. Nowadays, CD's are the norm. They are not the "new, unaccepted format" that they used to be. Standards have shifted from the LP & cassette days. The upper limit on the quantity of music is now set by the CD (about 75 minutes), and if bands choose to use this limit, more power to 'em. The only reason Scarred was left off the cassette was due to space constraints. I know that 90+ minute tapes exist, but for some industry manufacturing reason, they are not used. I think they made the right decision in excluding that song from the tape. If I were still a cassette- oriented consumer, I would rather not pay CD price for a double cassette that has one extra song. For those of you who are "stuck" with the cassette version, I have two suggestions: 1. Tape somebody else's CD on a 90 minute cassette and stop complaining. 2. Consider buying a CD player (thus removing yourself from the dark ages). This is not the first time cassette buyers have been shunned, and it definately won't be the last. Believe it or not, you might not miss the tape hiss when you crank up the volume.
