Message-ID: Hi! I just finished reading a studio-report on DT in a Swedish metal-magazine called Metal-Zone. There was an in-depth interview and report which touched on several items, but as far as the pictures went, there was pictures of John P fiddling with a guitar, and it was not the 7-string. It was a small white w/ red pickguard and it looked kind-of old, I have never seen this guitar before (though I'm just a bass-player i know some guitars), the notes to the pics read: 'John P putting down some guitar-tracks for Mirror' OK, it's maybe bogus but you'll never know! They also said what we already know that TLF and Eve will be released as singles-B-sides and that they would like to record ACOS soon. Then there was another small last-minute-thrown-in-article about Kevin's departure. There you learned bout the circumstances and what I didn't know (though I have followed the discussions here pretty close the last month) was that they did meet up with Jens, Kevin showed him how to play some of the more subtle parts on the new songs and they said that they would return when the time came to choose a REAL keyboardist. Unfortunately they ran away with that Dixie-Dregs guy on the Concrete Foundations Forum, and then upon returning to Jens, they were told that he'd already made up his mind and had planned to record some classical music in Sweden. It didn't clearly read if he'd been really interested to join but if he really did I feel sorry for DT. Then they missed THE chance to get the best keyboard-player in the world (he also a bit of a showman) and got some back-up-guy instead (can we still say back-up-guy here?). Ok, he's not at all bad but when the keyboards are such an important part of the music they should go with a guy that was a part of that mentality (ok, Jens didn't have a lot of freedom with Yngwie but he didn't just do fat strings either). Ok, won't bother you any more! One last thing: In SDV I think the words 'Do you really think I'd care' or something would have fit better than 'Do you really think I need you'. One last last thing: My fave AWAKE songs so far: 1) SDV 2) MIRROR/LIE 3) LSOAD 4) EROTOMANIA 5) 6:00 /Mats ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Oct 1994 14:15:59 -0500 (EST) From: Phil Felicia To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Album covers of I&W's and Awake Message-ID: > Empire was released in 1990 and IAW was recorded in 1991. I think it might have just been editted to fit the time constraints of the song. Maybe the original sample had a long pause in it or something. Another answer might be that the quote had other words in it too. For Example: "6:00 _and all's well_ ON A _wonderful_ CHRISTMAS MORNING" Well, it's a thought. Anyone have any idea what this sample is from? Maybe we should make a list of all the samples on the album with the movies (or whatever) that they are from. The length of the CD is only determined by the surface area, and not the thickness (at least at this time). As far as I know, all CD's are 1.2mm thick and 12cm in diameter... If you read my last post, I spent 2 days trying to get a hold of the file, let alone run it (I'm not a mac person, so ftp'ing was not a field day). I ended up having someone use FETCH to retrieve it, and this program automatically extracted it. I used STUFFUT 3.5 (or so, I think) to UNstuffit, and this created an executable icon. I clicked on it, and it ran, but it ran off the screen. I could only see the upper left 1/4. OK, I just ran it on a different MAC (a IIvx, I think), and it stayed on the screen (filled the whole thing up). The intro screen is cool. Looks like this: Music is playing but I can't remember which song. Dream Theater (in their Album cover logo) Big orange jupiter (like on the cover) which flips over into A big brown moon which flips over again into A grey moon with 6:00 on it (like on the cover) AWAKE Then the head of a statue comes up. Its a side view of the statue, and it doesn't look like the one on the cover (although, its probably supposed to be) The upper half opens up, and a spider on a web comes out, with a short story about the band, I&W and Awake. It closes and 4 mirrors appear (exactly like on the cover). Each mirror has one big blue eyeball in it, which continously blink. The mirrors are arranged two on each side of the statue: A part of CiaW keeps repeating. Mirror Mirror (bio) (Songs) Statue Mirror Mirror (Q&A) (bye) OK, then I started having problems. I clicked on bio. Pictures of all the guys are supposed to come up (I know this from seeing James and part of Kev when I couldn't get it all on the screen, and heard five clicks) But when I ran it this time, James came up, and CRASH (tried it 3 times, had to reboot every time.) Q&A locked twice as soon as I clicked on it, but the third time it let me in. The picture from inside Awake (w Kev looking directly to the right) is the background, and it shows questions come up from each band member's mouth. There is a place for the answers in the lower right hand corner. NEWSFLASH: The Q&A is exactly the questions and answers used in out FAQ. Now my question: Did they get it from us? , Did we get it from them? , or did we both get it from the fanclub? I mean, this was no coincidence, it was EXACT. I got through a couple of questions, and then it locked again. The SONGS part I got into once (I don't remember it that well) but it looked something like this: Side One: Side Two 6:00 The Mirror Silent man CiaW just like the cover w/ The Mirror IF the bald man in it, and LIE Erot. in color. This image is LSoaD Voices big and looks really cool Scarred Space Dye Vest I know that Silent Man should probably be on Side 1 as not to break up the trilogy, but this is how it was, not my error. The songs titles had flashing random highlighters bouncing around them, but I tried to click on them, and it didn't do anything. This is the only app. I successfully got into and out of. To get out I had to click on the red Spider that is present mostly everywhere. I also had to click on the spider to advance to a new question in Q&A. Well, thats all I got to, I think the only thing I missed out on was the bio part, which may have had something on each band member. I'm going to try it from another machine in the lab (maybe a powerMAC) and see if I get any further. The original Stuffit version of the file was about 1.6-1.8 Meg (I forget), and I don't know how large the executable turned out to be. I will post updates if I get any further. I'm under this strange impression that there's no info included in this that we don't already know. Nothing about Kevin's departure either. This program must have been written well before he left. Any questions, concerns, or help - email me. Well, I belive the synth 4 bars of so before the chorus is just like the good old days when you could actually hear the synth without straining, plus classic pitch bend, thick sound, etc... I get really pissed during parts of this album, for example, in the big flurry of Petrucci and Moore together in CIAW before the huge WAAAHHH followed by the woodblock part (you know what I mean)-they're both together yet Petrucci's sound drowns out the cool reverb echo of Moore's equivalent part. And also like in Eroto, when Petrucci is doing a phrase or two, and Moore harmonizes it by going successive thirds higher for example, it's again very difficult to hear. But it is the way it is--so I should just stop bitching. For those going to KC show, e-mail me to plan a get-together. Bye. About the Mac DT Interactive thing, I also downloaded it (about two weeks ago, or something, when it first came out). I've been kinda lazy and didn't say nothin or anything, sorry. But now I've mended my ways. When I downloaded it, I only had a PowerBook (B/W). I got the same problem that KAI (why the caps? just curious) -- except, with my PB screen, I think that only about a third of the entire thing was showing (cause it started in the middle of my screen). I was kind of pissed, cause I could hardly see _anything_ .. At least the music was cool. So any way, I opened the thing with ResEdit to see if I could change anything, and I found that the "stage" could be changed to a menu bar that could be manipulated instead of fixed. So I dragged the stage as high as it would go... I could see most of it, but the image was still too big (the curse of portability). It looked like KAI said, cept of course i couldn't tell what most of the stuff was (no color on mine, and I hadn't seen the disk yet). But unlike KAI's experience, most of the stuff worked for me. When I clicked on the song titles, it would play a 10-15 second bite. I was ecstatic cause the only song I had heard was Lie, albeit *very* infrequently. I had to bug them like hell to get them to play it -- and now that I've got the disk, I don't even listen to the radio anymore. Any way, what I saw was pretty wereool. Oh, and I tried to "lift" the song samples t And Hey, thanks to C-man for putting something out that 'the rest of us' can get. I was kind of disappointed when I saw that the song stuff (like Lie) was only available for PC.(Though I did manage to get the way short bit of 6:00) 2. C-Man, would it be considered ethical to call in the Dallas station and request Lie if we had no way of knowing what the result of that call would be? And if you don't think that's such a hot idea, how can the rest of us get that (and any other) single in our hot little hands? I live in Seattle, BTW. So, please aim some stuff this-a-way. Thanks 3. Open letter to the T-Shirt man. Sorry to be the hundredth guy to get on your back, but can we please get some feedback? Even if you just say "sorry dudes, but I've got the Pres on line one, the Nobel committee on two, and 60 messages in my voicemail -- no way do I have time to make more shirts," at least we'd stop hounding you. And if he's gone underground, can someone who knows tell us?? Thanks. Cause I'd like a shirt, too. XL 4. Overall, I don't think this album is as good as IaW. Not as melodic -- and I'm big on melody. Songs like Mirror/Lie are almost as fun to listen to as they are to play, but they just don't *shine* Which is one reason that it only took one listen for IaW to latch itself on to me, even though I couldn't fully grasp it all.
