I can't imagibe how it could've been done any better. I'm glad the naysayers were wrong. My only regret (sadly) is that we'll never get to see Kevin play any of it. I think the major problem here is, that we have a totally different musical background. I was always interested in real heavy stuff. So i went with that heavy music from Jimi H., Who, Led Zep., Cream (which is IMO the beginning of heavy metal) over to Deep P., RUSH!!!, YES, ... over to Jud.Pr., Black Sabb., ... over to Metallica, Met. Ch., Anthrax, Testament, ... up to our generation right now with DT, QR, Psych. Waltz, Ministry, FW!!!!, ... Sorry for my too hard flaming, but it was early in the morning and it was right after a night listening to the new one. I've always been and up until now I AM a metalhead and i think even scientists should be allowed to be!!! WHAT i actually wanted to say is that i can't follow your thoughts because i think we live in other musical universes (maybe parallel ones). Other lines seem to support this ("turns the music down but just can't seem to shake that sound" couldn't get his own music out of his head, "answer the call while you still hear at all because nobody will if you won't" his eventual decision to leave). CiaW and IF I haven't listened to or studied the lyrics enough -A Mind Beside Itself I figure there must be some reason why they chose Erotomania as a title for a song, since this is one band that doesn't dwell on sex as a topic for songs, unlike most others... "Voices" seems to be about someone that could have been in "The Wall"... I'm not sure how "The Silent Man" fits in at all... And there's the bell. will return later ------------------------------ Topic No. 6 Date: Fri, 7 Oct 1994 10:23:01 -0400 From: Edward Neal Haag To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 542 Message-ID: Hey gang! I haven't posted but a couple of times since I subscribed, but I will now. I tried to post on Tues. but the server was acting up and wouldn't send it. Anyhow, I felt it necessary to skip my History of Rock Music class on Tuesday to go and get my copy of AWAKE. Just a couple of comments: - 6:00 - Cool drum/guitar intro. I was immediately struck by how much heavier their sound was. I knew from all the posts going on by those people who had advance copies of the album that it was heavier, but I didn't expect this! Anyway, 6:00 is a great song. - Caught In A Web - This song is good, but to me it's kind of passe. To me, this song is a 'typical' rock song to me if Dream Theater can write a 'typical' song. For me, this song is AWAKE's version of "Wait for Sleep', good but not exceptional. - Innocence Faded - I like this song better than Caught in a Web, but it too is a little common sounding. Cool keys though. - Erotomania - I think this is one of the best rock instrumentals that I have heard in I don't know when! No flames please, but IMHO it is better than Ytsejam. I do agree though with others who have posted that it does wander in spots. - Voices - Love the intro. Very dramatic. I do think though that this song also drags a bit. I do like it though. - The Silent Man - Sorry if others don't, but I love songs like this, with only a few instruments and a good rock ballad. This song adds a nice contrast to the heavy stuff. At least this osng can stand on it's own, I don't think I can listen to 'Wait for Sleep' w/o listening to LtL. - The Mirror- Another really heavy track. It totally ROCKS! Who says keyboards don't belong in heavy metal? Don't start a flame war, I know Dream Theater is in the "category" of progressive metal. This is so far one of my favorites on this disc. - Lie - I don't see what all the flames were about relating to this song. Of course I still haven't heard the radio version because it seems the DJ's in Charlotte don't take requests of this nature too often. I really think Lie is one of the stronger songs on this disc. It seems to stick in my head whenever I listen to it. The lead-in from the Mirror is sudden but cool. The outro is really good. (was this the part left out of the single?) - Lifting Shadows off a Dream - I like the song but I think this is probably the weakest song on the disc at this point of my listening experience with this disc. It never really grabs at me and demands my attention. - Scarred - Great song. Great music. Nuff said. - Space-Dye Vest - I am even more impressed with Kev than I was before. The man can write some really great songs musically and lyrically. I can't say enough about his talent. His leaving is a greater blow to Dream Theater than most people think. I do respect his decision to leave, but I don't have to like it. Other misc. comments: I have been listening to this disc nonstop since Tues. (today being Friday), so I think I have definitely given this disc a fair listening to. (probaby heard it all the way through about 12 times, scattered songs more). These comments of course are just one man's opinion, and are not being forced on anybody. Any comments, questions, discussions welcome. If you have read this review with an open mind, I thank you very much. In general a lot of prog gets slagged for having too much musical and not enough emotional content. I think the emotional content and feel (relative to both lyric and music) is just far too overwhelming from minute one to not be bedazzled. The hook in CiaW and all of SDV, as well as James' guttaral growling in Lie...that shit just "says" something to me. They SOUND like they MEAN it, which I think was (in spots) lacking on IaW. I fully consider myself a REAL DT fan; I have tons of boots and such and stay well on top of everything they do. I DO listen to the music, BTW. Anyway, I spoke with a couple of people at EastWest Records earlier today. They're quite pleased with the initial sales of _Awake_ (the Musicland chain of stores sold out their initial order of 1,200 CDs in one day!). On the down side, radio could be helping out a lot more than it has; while maybe 60-90 stations are playing Dream Theater, only five stations nationwide are playing them throughout the day (something like 20 spins in a 24-hour period). I'm going to get the call letters and phone numbers of the stations in the top ten markets and post them to ytsejam over the weekend; I will send the CD single of "Lie" to anyone who rises to the occassion and hounds these stations into playing "Lie" (hold off on responding to me until after I post the list). On another note, _Headbanger's Ball_ is scheduled to air the Dream Theater segment this Saturday night so check it out. Finally, thanks to all who've defended this account on the newsgroups. I've been troubled by the individual who has been harrassing me because he believes that he should not only dictate how I post in the newsgroups but also follow-up my posts with repetitive statements about who I work for (BTW, after scores of complaints, his main Internet account was terminated, however, he has returned with an account through my Internet service provider in an effort to parade as me!). I'm happy to discuss my life in the multimedia world and on the Internet with anyone who emails me--let's not waste space on ytsejam over this issue. Anyway, the most disturbing act by this individual has been his role as an imposter posting outrageous, deceitful, messages using my screen name ("C man") and a too-close-for-comfort ID ("email_address_removed"). Message-ID: After listening to the album practically all day, I have a few more comments, and one big question.... Why is this album called Awake? I really don't think that this title really fits in with the concept of the album as a whole. Yes, Petrucci does manage to stick the title (capitalized) into a few of his songs, but aside from that....Overall, this album strikes me as a sort of "Wall" if you will -- as I mentioned in a previous post, this is, IMN-S-HO, a very dark album (thankfully not _grungy_ dark). So, what to call it? I think maybe "Loss" would be more appropriate. To name a few obvious songs to back this up: 6:00 (loss of a loved one); CiaW (loss of consortium/reality); IF (loss of innocence/faith); AMBI (loss of faith/sanity); The Mirror/Lie (loss of trust/self); LSoaD (loss of a loved one); Scarred (loss of faith/hope/trust); SDV (loss of love/self/purpose..."And I'll have no more dreams to defend" *ouch*). It comes to my notice that I just named all of the songs, so the proscution rests. (Disclaimer: I am _not_ suggesting that they actually try and change the name (that would be an interesting publicity stunt...with AMBI as the first song, too [ <-- I was thinking the same thing, Erik]!!); I'm just asking, Why "Awake?" Alright now for my comments (promise I'll try to keep them short): 1) JP has definitely improved since IaW -- he's actually close to developing some soul (Erotomania, Silent Man, _Scarred_) :-) 2) As was inevitable, I am now making an *official* statement that there are indeed more keys than I previously complained (CiaW esp, Scarred) 3) I would _not_ want to see SDV live. Don't get me wrong, I _love_ that song, it's just that it's too powerful...even after about 10 listens, I still get shivers, and am even practically moved to tears (hear that, all you women out there searching for a "sensitive pony-tail" guy?)(although mine's kind of short)(_pony-tail_, that is). And that's not why _I_ go to concerts. 4) I would not want to see IF live -- just to spare James the struggle. On the second verse, he is _really_ reaching for those notes, and it is nigh impossible to understand him. 5) I'm too long winded. sorry Chris *---* "I am a Rock, I am an Island" -- P.Simon * * R.Christopher Hailey *---* I am one who delights in ________*_*_*_ * email_address_removed *---* all manifestation of the ________ _ _ _' * email_address_removed *---* terpsichorean muse -- mp * * * * *---* "One must put up barriers To keep one's self intact" -- N.Peart ------------------------------ Topic No. 25 Date: Fri, 7 Oct 1994 10:10:30 -0400 (EDT) From: William T Bajzek To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Voices Message-ID: all of voices reminds me of queensryche btw, queensryche's queensryche ep sounds like iron maden with john arch singing, to me, much more than early fates does if YOU want to know ----- bill bajzek ------- and if YOU want to know just what i see ------- email_address_removed ------------ where were going look at yourself --- http://www.contrib.andrew --- keep your distance and dont ask me ----- .cmu.edu/usr/wb2a/home ----- and dont follow me ------------------------------ Topic No. 26 Date: Fri, 7 Oct 94 8:56:10 PDT From: Kelly Johnson To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: My thoughts....
