I tried the Berklee Center and they said that the date was only tenative so far and said to call back later this week. I tried the Strand in Providence (who coniently have a Boston phone number :) and although I got only a machine (have to call back Monday) it seems that they don;t have info. I got both of their phone numbers (as well as the New Haven phone number) from Ticketmaster, who as to be expected, were clueless. ------------------------------ Topic No. 3 Date: Sat, 17 Sep 1994 15:14:59 -0400 (EDT) From: TIM LODGE - SGA SENATOR/PRE-LAW/MICRO/MAC LABS To: email_address_removed Subject: awake.... Message-ID: ok this goes out to all of you that said 1. i hear lie and its gay. 2. it really sucks. 3. it doesnt change form 5/16 to cut time within a lydian 16th note arpegio. 4. therefore i am selling my dt collection to the used cd shop. I've heard the full AWAKE many times now and you simpy cannot judge the album off one song. I'll be the first to admit that LIE doesnt sound like typical DT, but that doesn't mean its not a good song in its own right. Plus the single version of LIE has beginning and ending parts cut out of it that make the song even better. Please give the full album a chance when it comes out. Listen to tunes like Erotomania, Voices..hell the whole trilogy is incredible. 6:00, caught ina web,.....basically the ENTIRE album rules. I'd say its even better then 80% of Images and Words....I don't know if anything can top Metropolis or Learning to Live..... John Petrucci originally made the tape of the song, an instrumental version, for one of his guitar students to practice along with. Somehow, Rich got ahold of a copy of it later and did all sorts of demented things with it. :) John Petrucci seemed quite embarrassed when I mentioned having heard the demo to him. I think he doesn't want people to even entertain the thought that that's him doing those bizarre helium-inspired vocals. ;) So, no, it's not John singing it, or Kevin even (or...so they SAY;), it's this Rich guy. :) Little did he know it would eventually end up in the clutches of DT fans everywhere. ;) air email_address_removed ------------------------------ Topic No. 5 Date: Sat, 17 Sep 1994 15:35:36 -0500 (CDT) From: William Wright To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Dream Theater Concert Dates are HERE! Matt ------------------------------ Topic No. 8 Date: Sun, 18 Sep 1994 01:25:13 C From: "From the land of corn and physics..." To: email_address_removed Subject: Lie, Awake & other cool stuff Message-ID: Hmmm... I just got my copy of Awake, and thought it was great, including Lie. Of course, I appreciated it more each time I listened to it, kinda like Images and Words. I haven't heard the single of Lie, and wonder if I ever will, seeing as how the "rock" stations in Iowa don't really play much that rocks! Lemme put forth an analogy: Imagine that you had "When Day & Dream Unite" for a few years, then heard the first single off I&W, except instead of "Pull Me Under", it was "Another Day". Some of you would probably say it was gay and shit like that. Much as many would like a 70 minute version of "The Killing Hand", you'd have to "settle for" songs like "Take the Time" and "Metropolis". Does anyone see what I'm getting at? (it rules!) Another thing: I guess it wasn't until I saw DT live for the first time (The Chance, Po-kip-see (no, but I can't spell it) NY) that I realized DT was a metal band. A real metal band, in many ways like Iron Maiden; the only thing Awake did was reaffirm that. Mind you, it's the best metal out there, but if the only thing you liked about DT was the keyboard solos, maybe you won't think Awake is as good as I&W. Then again, if you only liked keyboard solos, you wouldn't like I&W, you'd rather listen to Chick Corea! There are keyboard/guitar harmonies on Awake, and there are plenty of places where keys are the driving instrument, but make no mistake, this is a guitar dominated album. Petrucci absolutely shreds everywhere! And James has real diversity in his vocals... he sounds rougher in some parts (kinda like "Pull Me Under" from Live at the Marque), and very smooth in others. And has anyone said anything about Portnoy's drumming?! (It RULES!) I guess I do regret not hearing Kev more, but of course we don't know if that was his choice to not do more, or just the direction the rest of the band was moving in. Anyway, I know some people will be upset because DT didn't make "Images & Words II", but if you drop your preconceived notions of what the album is "supposed to" sound like, I think you'll find... IT RULES!!! ------------------------------ Topic No. 9 Date: Sat, 17 Sep 1994 23:33:23 -0700 From: BarryB To: email_address_removed Subject: DT on LD? Message-ID: I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I must have missed it... Anyone know if DT has any video releases (offical or bootleg) available on laserdisc? Maybe as a Japanese import? I'm probably hoping for a little too much, but I refuse pay money for a VHS tape-- the quality is simply dissapointing. -BarryB ------------------------------ Topic No. 10 Date: Sun, 18 Sep 94 09:56:57 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Jordan Message-ID: Hey, there! I'm 'listening' to Jordan Rudess's "Listen" right now and hey! This guy can play AND write. He'd make a great addition to the band if he stays on. That is the coolest part of the album to me. I like to see band take a common melody and interweave it into different songs. The song 'Space Dye Vest' is probably my favorite right now. I have to admit though, there are two songs on here that I tend to skip when listening to the album. Maybe they'll grow on me, but here's my .02 'Innocence Faded' - This song is just too commercial for me It really reminds me of the Yngwie song 'Heaven Tonight', because it was just so different from what he normally did. 'The Silent Man' - This song is ok. But it seems to be like a 'me too' to sound like Extreme doing 'More than Words' or Mr. Big doing 'To Be With You' The song is boring! Anyway, the rest of the album is totally killer. So don't flame me too bad! -- ***************************************************************** * Jason L. AOL puked when I sent the first one, and I'm not sure if it got to the list, so I'm retyping it. Just got my copy of AWAKE. After one listen, I couldn't believe how much harder than I&W it is. Someone better tell Dimebag Darrell of Pantera that his effects rack is missing - Petrucci stole it. I really miss the Alex Lifesonish powerchording of I&W. I then listened to I&W and AWAKE back-to-back, and I think that while AWAKE is better than 99.9% of the crap out there, it can't compare (for the most part) with I&W. I love 74 minutes of music, but some of the songs are simply too long and kind of wander around without ever getting tight. Like, what's up with the instrumental ending to 'Innocence Faded'? By the way, VERY cheesy chorus. I mean, the end of the tune comes from out of the blue. I don't get it. I LOVE Caught in a Web. I LOVE Space-Dye Vest. Kind of sad and fitting that it's the last tune of the album. Voices. Can you say Mindcrime? Did DT have a big day at the beach planned and invite Queesnryche in to cut a tune for AWAKE? Good song. Is DT a better QR than QR is? Hmm... One more thing. There's not much room for a Kevin Moore in the band that made AWAKE. With the two John's chunking away, the keys just seemed to fatten up the sound. I can see why he was unhappy. Bummer. Good album, but it'll take some getting used to.
