Ok.. I have a little info on this from an unlikely source. I'm almost 100 miles east of Austin, TX, but I can kinda pick up their radio stations, often quite well at night. So I happened to tune in to a show they were doing one night on local music, and they were interviewing a band called Push Monkey, I believe. They said they would be appearing at the Foundations Forum, and that they would be right after Dream Theater, followed by Bruce Dickinson. I think that they said that this would be on the first day, which I guess would be the 22nd. I think that they also mentioned that Dickinson would be the last artist in that first day, so that DT would be 3rd from the last act that day or evening, but I'm not sure about that. I'm sure about the order that they said the bands would appear in, though. This Austin band also said that the Forum would be a rather orderly event... it will be in a large ballroom or something, with two stages at opposite ends of the room. One band will perform on one of the stages, while the other stage will be getting set up for the next act. So (if everything goes smoothly anyway) the time between the end of one act and the beginning of the next act's show should only be about 5 minutes. So, for anyone who is lucky enough to be there, make sure you go to the stage opposite the one where a band's playing before DT gets started. By the way, the band didn't make any comments about DT other than the brief mention about the Forum... guess they have no idea how dubious a position they'll be in, trying to follow up DT... hehe So, let's see, here's another contribution to discussion I can make that I haven't seen mentioned before. Lie is being played on a nationally broadcast hard rock network called Z-Rock. They only have select affiliates in some areas of the northeast, the midwest, and a few isolated stations in the western U.S. too, but their greatest concentration is probably in Texas (their station, where the DJs are and everything, is in Dallas). But anyway, they premiered Lie on a weekly show called New Stuff about 3 weeks ago, and I heard them play it during that show again the following week. I've been pretty busy lately, so I haven't been able to tell how often they're playing it, but I did hear them play it once during normal programming, just a couple of days ago. I hope it gets into regular rotation; I just can't hear it enough! :) I like it quite a bit, but I guess that's just me. And yes, it sounds awesome in full CD quality. :) Very intense. I can't wait to hear the rest of Awake.. I know there's enough hard rock to satisfy me in Lie alone, and from people's advance reviews, it sounds like there's some good progressive material on it as well. Sorry that this is rather long, just one more note, about the IRC chat with some of DT next week. C-man says that some people will be moderating the event. I hope that this means that the channel will actually be moderated. For those not familiar with IRC, if a channel's just open, any yahoo can come in and flood the screen, or type obscenities, or whatnot, to disrupt an otherwise decent conversation. :) So I guess the people in charge of the event can allow only people to talk if they are asking a question, to cut down on unrelated stuff cluttering up the screen.. or if that's not considered too important, maybe they can make the channel invite only. Either way, this may require that people (from this list, maybe some others?) need to "preregister" to be allowed to join the channel, or talk on the channel, during the interview. Just offering a few ideas to make the thing go more smoothly. That's about it for now. Talk to ya'll later on! In my days back when I was an evil BBS pirate, I was part of an ANSI group called Acid. I was doing ANSI work for pay and a local record store took notice, and they were setting up for a big DT promotion since DT was on its way to town for the first time ever (3/10/93). They gave me $50 to create the following ANSI art. I just dug it up while cleaning off the old hard disk so I had forgotten about it entirely! :) I'm gonna give you a full blank screen so you can switch your emulation to ANSI on your terminal so you can see this. Mike Bahr, email_address_removed, email_address_removed ------------------------------ Topic No. 9 Date: Sat, 10 Sep 1994 03:54:20 -0500 (CDT) From: Eric Moegling To: email_address_removed Subject: Lie Message-ID: I just listened to Lie...and came up (took me a while) with something I didn't like in the song...here goes...Why the heck did they give half the song to John, when they could've made it an even better one by sharing with Kev...for example; in take the time, almost all of the solos are John and Kev kinda battling (if you will) during the solo (both are doing incrdible solos at the same time, or take turns to give it an awesome approach)...with Lie, especially during the part where John is using a little too much of his new Wah pedal, Kev's just kinda there somewhere in the background...instead of up front in the mix doing a complimentary solo along with John...No wonder he left (jus kiddin)...I'm serious though, the keys make so much of a difference in the band, and this is just another example of either bad arranging, or a producer who's just looking for hits (which as succeeded!) (IMHO). Anyone else with me on this one? Aw heck...I'll go on (it's way early, and noone's even up yet, so hat the hey)...Since I've heard part of SDV, and Eroto, I'll give my "So Far" opinions. SDV...what can I say (if I haven't before)...with just the first 50 seconds I'm totally blown away...I think this could possibly be the absolute perfect song...and if so, then I have no use for listening to anything anymore...anyways, this definetly shows just how important of a piece DT has lost (considering the majority of this song is Kev's) (member-wise)...I'm sure they have found an excellent replacement (the band does have good taste!)...but this song is kinda eerie, and yet melodic and kinda (xcuse the phrase) beautiful (I freakin' hate using that word!!!) at the same time...I don't know...it's just...Cool! Eroto (or at least the 50 second sample) is totally killer, and once again, Kev is sounding totally excellent...the sounds he has on those keys are just incredible, and set a really gentle tone to the musical chaos going on throughout the majority of the mix (that's what I've always liked best about DT, the ability to have a million different musical emotions going on all at once...Killing Hand for instance!). And once again...as with every DT song...the musicianship is perfect on all...Mike and Myung are both a lot more audible in the mix...and (I still can't believe I'm saying this) James "Yes he can actually sing" LaBrie...well, you get the hint (and that's what I'm referring to him as from now on!!! (unless he butchers all of AWAKE while on tour). Well fellow DT enthusiasts...it's been fun...and I want a butt-load of responses/opinons/veiws/thoughts to come from this...cause I Took The Time (I'm totally sorry!!!!!!)...Take care, and don't worry...it'll be KILLER!!! Later! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to the circle of fifths, and the pattern of sharps and flats: If the alphabet continued as notes progressed (Using Major Key Sig's) (i.e A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, etc.) eventually the key of Z Major would have 4 sharps. email_address_removed ERIC MOEGLING: email_address_removed email_address_removed ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 510 *************************
